My favorite movie of all time. Poni beat me to it but it's loosely based on a real mountain man named John "Liver Eatin'" Johnston. There's supposed to be some truth to the situation with the Crow Indians and they sent 20 warriors after him one at a time. He killed them, cut their livers out and took a bite. Also, one Souix liver.
Many of the other characters portrayed in the movie had real life counterparts as well. Mountain men liked to build up legends about themselves as it made them more fearsome to marauding indians and murderous, theiving white men. Hatchet Jack was known for dismembering his victims with, well, a hatchet. Another guy, not in the movie, Apache Joe (I believe) supposedly had a very fine horse hair bullwhip that he could decapitate poeple with at a distance. I love mountain man lore!

Jerimiah liver eater Johnson was in fact a real trapper and declared a personal war against the Black Foot tribe. After he'd kill a Black Foot warrior he would cut out part of their liver and eat it. Some indian customs believe that eating part of your enemy gave you their strength. Regardless, the real life JJ was a bad ass mofo. I spent a summer pretending to be a "Mountain Man" at a scout camp I worked at. We'd put on demonstrations everyday on setting traps, throwing tomahawks, skinning pelts, and shooting black powder rifles. It was great. The hawken rifle in the movie is similar to the one I now have and I also have an antique beaver pelt top hat from Saks.

Hugh was another bad-ass. I'm going to have to dig up all my books on the mountain man era and manifest destiny stuff.
