How many scales do you see in cigar factories?

Actually many factories will pre-weigh what the rollers get. The Davidoff factory will for exemple weight the blend in advance and give the pile to the roller, the roller will get a 5 kg. pile and is expected to roll 50 cigars of 10 grams each. If he makes 48 his cigars are too tight, if he makes 52 they are too loose. So the blend itself is weighed first.

No don’t get me wrong, you don’t need a scale. But once you have your average leaf weight it’s easy to convert. Leaf Only has the average amount of leave per pound on their web site so if you know that you have 80 leaves per lbs it gives you a easy way to convert and somehow keep your blend to your liking.

I use Filemaker 18 to develop the app, so all I do is drag and drop from a browser to Filemaker. Are you on iOS? My app will work on Windows machine and iPads, iPhones etc.

nah im an apple hater! (im actually just not tied to the apple ecosystem so I run android/windows)

I’m not the biggest apple fan either but being working with FileMaker for Widows for 20 years and it has a runtime version on iOS. Will definitely send you the windows version soon, would love feedback. Don’t want to hijack this tread so will start a new one.

Working on the blend screen at the moment, still quite rough. Will clean up the looks after the functionality is done.

Made a random blend this evening as my earlier smoke was off target. This one was one Nicaraguan Condega ligero and one Dominican ligero, bound and wrapped with American CT shade. This one is on target.

Satisfying and yummy.
The first one was made with leaf that had been moistened a week earlier and not rolled yet. It had some ammonia in it part way into smoking. Not a satisfying smoke. The second smoke of the day was with filler leaf that had not been moistened.
The second one was paired with a Founders Breakfast Milk Stout. On an empty stomach while seasoning a griddle, the cigar and beer seemed to work well.

I now have a few kinds of leaves to play with, been experimenting with different blends and ratios. One thing that I have noticed is that many of my viso leaves are often thicker and darker than some of my ligero leaves. Not sure but is there is a correlation with leaf thickness and darkness and strength. Would you tend to lower the Ligero percentage if blending with dark thick viso?

Not always but, most of the time and, yes. If I was asked what was the most common thing about blending? that might be it..
..getting in there can make all the matters. "get to know your leaf" ..your doing it.

Seco leaves.... been trying a few blends with different seco percentage, from 20 % to over 50 %. At 50%, the smoke tasted bland like meat without salt. With 20% the other fillers made the smoke quite strong. In general are most seco leaves quite bland? Is there a big difference between seco leaves variety or should I expect more or less very mild taste with good burning quality?

Second blending question, with which leaf do you start building your blend in general? Do you start for example with your ligero and match other leaves to it or do you build your blend using a different approach?

I realize now that rolling quality or skill is just about secondary compared as to be able to have a nice blend, if the smoke looks beautiful the better but if it is badly blended then the enjoyments is greatly diminished.

At the moment, I have the following ligero in stock which are good but they don’t seem to have the taste that he is looking for;
Cibao Valley Corojo ligero
Cibao Valley Criollo ligero.

I’m thinking of ordering any two of the following;

San Vicente Ligero WLT
Nicaraguan Ligero Esteli LO
Paraguayan Criollo Ligero Filler LO

The second closest was the WLT "Dominican ligero" of about 4 years ago, which I now believe was a Piloto. I haven't tried the current WLT Piloto batch,so I don't know how it compares.

Current Piloto has a peppery/spice taste to me not much chocolate

Like Bliss said the Nic Habano is the closet but your not gonna get that store bought cigar chocolate taste from the leaf we have available. I’d try some Nic leaf and get a CT broadleaf wrapper and see how close you can get
