Oh - knives. I love them.
I didn’t take the time to look at what I wyd already likely posted - but, wanted to share a couple of knives I’m currently enjoying. One older - one newer.
In the photo below:
Top knife is my Fallkniven F1. It’s an original before they got into the crazy new metals. You can’t see all the scratches it’s earned through use and sharpening on stones, but - it’s one helluva knife for the price. I’d recommend this to any knife lover. Especially fixed blades. It’s been through deer and completed Every task I could think to use it for - with ease. Usually requires simple honing to maintain the edge. But, when you get hard with it - sharpening the convex edge with stones is a breeze. It’s sharper now than when I first got it. Takes a while to hone those stone skills for convex - but it simply is not hard to do. It’s earned the spot as my usual carry for excursions in the woods. Solid knife for the money. It’s laminated VG-10... and has 440C on the outside as the sandwich metal.
The bottom knife is my newer Benchmade Puukko 200. It’s been out with me all fall and into the winter. The bastard fell out of its sheath and hit my garage (concrete floor), so I had to do a little repair to the tip and blade. But, you can’t tell. It’s 3V and some tough ass metal - other knives I have would have required serious repair - this one was minimal. Yes, still makes me mad - but, what a shitty sheath Benchmade... it sucks for the 162 Bushcrafter as well...so, they get a zero in my. Ok on sheath quality - but, still an A on blades. It’s not seen the paces the Fallkniven has, but I’m keeping it with me as I engage with the outdoors. Still a great knife. And I believe the Fallkniven and Benchmade Puukko are the same price at the moment
so, for a 3.75 - 4 inch fixed blade - at the moment I’d say go Fallkniven all the way. The convex edge wins out for the moment. I don’t like the secondary bevel on the Benchmade, so I’m going to convex it when I have time... so, it may be a while. Once it carries a convex edge, I think it’s going to be just as good, maybe better for certain tasks - but the Fallkniven is likely to maintain the lead on a more multi-purpose knife. I’m not a “bushcrafter” so, the Puukko was a nod to simply trying the 3V steel on a knife from a decent knife maker without breaking the bank
I do like the more rubbery handles on the benchmade and the profile is also better for filling the hand. The rubbery meaning slightly more grippy.
Anyway - sorry for the long post. Just geeking out a little on knives from time to time.
