Torpedos I cut so that the opening is just about a 40 ring guage.

Everything else I cut right at the shoulder...removing the cirular cap but leaving the wrap below it so as to hold the wrapper together.
I do the same, maybe a bit larger on the torps

I'm in the same boat as Squid. I prefer a punch to a cutter most of the time. So much so, that I'm never without a punch on my keys... just in case, y'know.

I have never used a punch. Is sharpness an issue with them? How long do they last?
Sharper is always better, obviosuly. I've never really had a problem with one getting dull... hell, I'm more inclined to either lose them or have my ex fiance steal them with the rest of my cigar stuff :sadcry: than to have one go dull.

I think part of the reason I prefer a punch to a cutter is that I've never had a good quality cutter. Every time I think about buying one, I see a few sticks that I can afford if I put off buying that nice looking Xikar. So instead I grab a few extra sticks and use my punch or pick up a cheap punch. A cheap punch performs far better (in my experience) than a cheap cutter. Of course, a more expensive punch seems to have no serious added benefit over a cheap one... unlike with cutters where you definitely seem to get what you pay for.

a few guys have mentioned this, but ill open my cutter, lay it on a table, put the cigar in it, and then snip.... it works well for me. i never worry about cutting off too much.

ive had a few and i like em. but for larger ring gauges only. if the stick is too small, youll just end up blowing up the end. kinda like parking a caddie in a closet. it just dont fit. but any punch ive ever had worked fairly well. just kept losing them.

You can get self sharpening punches but like the others I lose mine before I can test that.:nodlaugh:

I've been using my Palio cutter of late. Place it on a flat surface and open the blades ... put head of cigar perpendicular into opening ... close blades. I find this gives a perfect cut, removing about 1/8" off the cap.

IMO, 1/4" is too much - unless you are cutting torpedoes or belicosos.
exactly what I do, it has never failed me!:peace:

tend to cut a bit more for figurados...obviously!
