So I'm sitting by the hotel pool last night and my aunts new boyfriend comes up and inquires about what I'm smoking. I said to him that for tonight only a Cuban would do. I told him I was smoking a Partagas SP#2. Now here's a guy who's a very occasional smoker. However, since he was from Tampa, I think he thought he was a cigar "know it all". He proceeds to let everyone sitting around us know that there's absolutely no difference in taste from a Cuban seed Dominican and a Cuban puro. Of course I took serious issue with this. He used the old argument that the only reason people smoke Cubans is because they're illegal and people think it's cool to show they're smoking Cuban. I think I did a fairly good job of putting him in his place with the conversation, but I did decide something as a result. Because so many people DO think it's all about acting cool, I don't think I will again admit to smoking a Cuban unless I am around cigar literate people. Just isn't worth the hassle. :noemotion

let him think what he wants. if you know what you know, and he thinks he knows what he knows, and you know that what he thinks he knows is not what you know, just blow a big cloud of smoke in his face and smile.... ya know??

Smoking a Cuban is cool for about an inch into your first one, after that it's just because many of them taste better. Good decision, you'll get people like you encountered, or one's who never smoked a cigar and all of a sudden they want a very expensive Cuban.

I agree, I smokem because I like them. No other reason.
Exactly my sentiment. Everyone should enjoy what they are smoking, regardless of where it's from or how much it costs. I've thrown away some pretty expensive cigars before because they tasted like crap or were poorly constructed. I've noticed that people who worry too much about what others are saying and/or doing are way too insecure about themselves to warrant my time or attention. And if they can't take a joke, then fu*k 'em.

Yeah, I've had a similar experience. Guy at work tells me that the best cigars are all non-cuban, "the cuban thing is overrated", he says. So, I ask him how many he smokes in year. He says six or so. I say how many were Cuban's? He says he has had a "few" cubans. He had no answer for my question on how he could know so much having only had a "few" cubans. He then goes on to tell me about his humidor "I've got a humidor and all that, I know about cigars". I told him that if I owned a baseball team, that doesn't make me a baseball expert, it just means I have money. Owning a humidor doesn't make you an expert on cigars...

He actually revised his statement at that point and said that it doesn't have to be Cuban to be a great cigar, too which I agreed.

i smoke them cause it makes me look cool :dunno:
I thought smoking Cigars made you cool. You mean they have to be Cuban Cigars to be cool. Then why are all these women running after me no matter what I smoke. Could it be that I'm Cool no matter what I do?

A few months before I started smoking cigars seriously, a friend of mine brought 4 cigars to a poker game. We went outside during a break in the game and he told us one of them was Cuban, a Nicaraguan, Dominican, Phillippine, and Honduran.

He had removed all the bands, and we lit them up and passed them around. After the second pass, I said that I had found the one I liked and they could keep the others. Guess which one I liked?

It was the Cohiba.

Of course, my friends had issues with my commandeering the better cigar. Now, after smoking for a while, I know that all of the cigars that he brought were pretty good ones, but the Cohiba just tasted better than all the others.

I had always wondered about the mystique of Cuban cigars, but as a rookie doing a blind tasting, I found the one I liked pretty quickly. Nowadays I find myself a bit irked by the fact that the cigars I like the most are the hardest to get and could potentially cause me a serious amount of grief.

He also told a funny story which I ommited. Anyone wanna guess which story it is?
Oh, I'll go ahead. As it turns out, he has a maid that his family has employeed for years. Now you know where this is going right? Well, you guessed it, she's from Cuba and she somehow procures boxes and boxes of Cuban cigars. The end of the conversation actually came when I told him about the online cigar community. I told him that's about the biggest ongoing joke people tell, that and the glass top Cohibas.

He did bring me to Tampa Sweethearts though and that made up for a bunch. It was awesome to finally be able to go there in person. Got me a few (4) Untold Stories, Woam, Maddie Signatures and one Opus Lancero from '05. I passed on the Anejos although they only had 77's and 48's. Very cool shop!!:bouncetau

I have a client, who only smokes when I give him one, smuggle some Cohibas back from Mexico for me as a gift. 10 of them in the famous varnished glass top box. I never told him the truth and he still tells in great detail how he smuggled them into the country. I kept them for several years and then sent them to Mark N2 Cigarmony, I think Mark was impressed because I had aged them before sending them to him.

The point being, most folks that profess one country's product over the other might not have the proper information to make an informed decision.
I don't even try to argue the point any more and always smoke my cigars naked in public.
