Smitherman urges debate on smoking
March 27, 2007
Canadian Press
Ontario Health Minister George Smitherman says there should be a debate on banning smoking in apartment buildings.
Smitherman says he would prefer if market-forces drove some landlords to declare their buildings smoke-free.
But Smitherman says it would be worth having a debate over whether legislation is also needed.
His comments come as an Ontario anti-smoking group says a poll it commissioned finds strong support for banning smoking in apartments.
The Ontario Tobacco-Free Network says in two Ipsos-Reid surveys last year, 70 per cent of apartment dwellers said smoke from their neighbours bothered them.
Smoking is currently prohibited in elevators, hallways and other common areas in Ontario, but not in apartment residences.

pretty stiff to tell someone they can't smoke in their homes. CA is looking at banning smoking in cars with some stipulations attached.

Well, looks like I am not moving to Canada soon.

If they can get apartments ruled as non-smoking environments, how long before they start telling you what you can or can not do in your own home?

Think along the lines of "think of the children harmed by parents smoking in homes", and it gets kind of scary.........

I can think of a number of other common issues that will soon be on this sliding slope ...

Perfume / after shave
Strong or spicy ethnic foods ( Indian, Thai, Vietnamese, Mexican, etc. )
BBQ grills and smokers
Aromatic candles
Air freshners
Body odor
Flatulence

I shudder to think what "civilization" will be like in 100 years.

All is says is that the health minister said there should be a debate, not that its illegal yet. So maybe some apartment buildings will be marked as smoke-free. If its in a complex perhaps they could have a smoking building for people who don't care.

That what was they said about restaurants up here when that debate started. Now, like other juristictions, no smoking in any 'workplace' is the law. Even B&M's had to close their lounges and private clubs such as the Royal Canadian Legion are impacted.
I'm no pro-smoking fanatic ... just wondering where it's all headed. Guess as long as my front porch is available I'm still OK.

"His comments come as an Ontario anti-smoking group says a poll it commissioned finds strong support for banning smoking in apartments."

That's a stretch according to the next sentence...

"The Ontario Tobacco-Free Network says in two Ipsos-Reid surveys last year, 70 per cent of apartment dwellers said smoke from their neighbours bothered them."

People stating that smoke bothers them is a far cry from saying they support a ban on smoking.

Personally I can see where a smoke free building would make sense but we all know it would never stop at that.
