I thought I'd make this, hopefully not redundant, thread to discuss shows we've attended, that were neither our first nor our latest.

Though I have no musical talent, I am an avid appreciator of a diverse range of music and love a good concert.

What about you? Seen anything great and underrated (or unknown) or maybe overpriced and disappointing?

So, to kick it off, the earliest shows I vaguely and fondly recall are The Boston Pops at the harbor on the 4th of July or maybe New Year's (there were fireworks that night) , Peter, Paul and Mary and Sha Na Na on separate occasions at the South Shore Music Circus and Arlo Guthrie and his son's rock band at some church. Of all things Wikipedia claims Sha Na Na is still active so hurry up, put on your masks and go see them before they become extinct. Those were the best shows I attended with my parents, as a child, other than Chick Corea and Tom Paxton (see below).


P.S. I do promise the bulk of my contributions to this thread will be rock. It's just not what I was raised on and I do have nostalgia for (almost) any music I ever enjoyed.

I used to watch Sha Na Na with my mother. I believe that show was on Sunday evenings??? Classic stuff

I’ve seen Phish a bunch, and still see them as much as possible every tour. It’s harder with kids, but my wife and I still get to at least 3 shows a year.

As far as underrated shows I have seen, Edward Sharp and the Magnetic Zero’s is one. I saw them at Red Rocks and was amazed at the performance.

Band of Horses, the original lineup, was another one that was impressive in person.

I saw James Brown on his 70th birthday at Bonnaroo festival in 2003. That was cool!

Galactic is a killer live show, and one I try to never miss when they are around!

I saw Primus open for The Flaming Lips. Primus was awesome, I left when The Flaming Lips started.

Man, there are tons more shows that I have seen but can’t recall at the moment.
I’ll check my box of stubs and post some more good ones later!

I seen two weekends of Phish plus one regular show. Good stuff!

Seen Primus one and a half times (I'll explain later). Think I might walk out on Lips too.

James Brown sounds awesome to see from what little I know of him!

Seen the Peppers once on each coast. They rocked at least in '94 and I think '00.

Well back in 78' my cousin said do you want to go to the "Yes" concert? I sad sure even though I did not know who" Yes" was and never herd there music! On the way to the Los Angeles Forum he played the cassette (lol) "Tormato" I had seen concerts there before, but as we walked in I noticed something was strange. I had seen were our sets were (in the first set of risers about 1/2 way back from where I assumed the stage would be. As we started down and kept going down we were getting closer to the floor and when we got to our seats we were sitting right in front of a round stage in the middle of the Forums floor. I can tell you this was one of the loudest concerts I have been too as there were giant speaker / amps all around the bottom of the round stage. You could not ever ask someone next to you a question (and I tried I had 40 thai stick joints with me and left my light in the car) lol I kept screaming to the guy next to me MATCH MATCH MATCH I finally got him to under stand. And I lit the first one and kept lighting the next off the end of the one I finished! What can I say I was a bit of a stoner back then. LOL anyway wether it was all that weed or not "It was one of my top 5 concerts I have seen to this day!!!

I've seen Primus a few times. As a bay area kid, we loved our local bands. Two shows stick out for me. The first was at the Greek Theater at the UC Berkeley campus, and was right after Sailing the Seas of Cheese came out. Firehose opened for them. The stage was set up like a used car lot. Halfway through the show Les starts talking about something(I can't remember) and then pulls his long hair(wig) off his head and he was shaved bald. The crowd went nuts!

The second show was a New Years Eve concert in Oakland. Charlie Hunter Trio and House of Pain opened up for them. House of Pain got pissed off at someone in the crowd and they eventually walked of stage. Of course Primus rocked it, but it was a bizarre lineup and and the first time I saw a band or group walk off stage.

During my teens three guys I went to school with played a lot of free or cheap local shows.

I can't find anything live by them, though I know there was some up at some point.

Their album, but sadly not the demo is up, at least and I thought this appropriate.

April 29th, 1994:

I had hair down to my butt. One of my friends had a license. One of my friends had a mom. That mom had a car she actually let a ragtag group of us borrow to head off to Rhode Island.

We went to the Strand to see Pantera with Crowbar opening for them. Crowbar put on a great show, but I later tried to get into them and found them on the depressing side.

They did serve as a nice backdrop for us to pass joints around the mosh pit (one like I'd never seen before) to prepare for the main event, and what an event it was!

When the big boys came out the mosh pit exploded, bigger and more brutal. I don't recall all the gory details of course(sadly), but Phil, Dime, Rex and Vinnie created a monster out of me that night.

Suddenly I had to see as many concerts as I could in addition to smoking way too many cigarettes and doing way too much pot (or whatever else struck my fancy). I thank them all for it.

...so of course I couldn't find that show but here's a show/interview from that era. Remember Pantera is NSFW unless you work somewhere really cool.

I think my most memorable show was Summer Jam '73 at Watkins Glen (The Band, The Allman Bros, and the Grateful Dead - 600,000 people).

Got there a week before the concert while they were still building the stage. Camped out on the concert grounds until the show. Borrowed a sax to jam with some folks and even got my photo in the local paper. Reminds me that I was once one of the "young people."

Considering I was selling and sharing crazy amounts of herb, I soon had more friends/acquaintances some of whom even had their own vehicles.
We started checking out all-ages and 18+ shows in Boston and Cambridge. Here is one of my favorites that I saw far too few times.
The other 3 we would chase around and would sometimes even open for national acts.
I sure was not at this show as I was a Washingtonian when it happened, but here it is:

Got to see The Band once, knowing nothing of them and The Grateful Dead on one of Jerry's last nights in Boston, both back in 1994. Both were amazing!

Saw these guys loads of times including at least 3 free Hempfests on Boston Common. This is another show I definitely wasn't at due to being West coast. Shuckins!

Once I saw them try to play Great Woods, opening for a national act and they claimed Clutch had just stolen their soundman.

That was the only time they disappointed other than later pulling a no-show afore Drown and Clutch. Payback?

These boys played almost anywhere Tree did. The mosh pits were the sickest I've seen to this day. Rumor had it their Boston fans at least were all hopped up on speed. Maybe that is why.

Thanks to wanting to see Tree and S.B.C. again and once seeing the video for A Shogun Named Marcus on MTV when they played videos, we put up more money than we usually would to see those guys open for Clutch and I discovered what would become my favorite band of all time, though it would take many years to admit it. I don't like playing favorites. Here's a show from the year before I discovered them. Wish I coulda been there. Looks like this is before they released the video on MTV, but were already promoting that album. When I saw them they were promoting their self-titled which was not out yet. They're always cool like that! This one is definitely a VHS rip. NSFW
