I had to make the hardest decision in the 30 years of my life today. I had to put to sleep my dog (Tobie). I'm completely devastated right now. He has been with us for a little more then 8 years. However, he has been with me threw some of the most difficult times of my life (1st divorce, financial problems, loss of family members etc) as well as the most happiest times. He had cancer that was rapidly spreading through out his body and we had to make a decision to put him down on the operating table today or let him suffer for a few more weeks. With all the health problems he has had we could not let him suffer any more. It was for the best.

Now I have to watch Zen, his partner in crime for the past 6 years to make sure he doesn't suffer any depression since they were in separate-able.

He was the best companion and best friend, he will always be loved and missed.

Man I'm sorry to hear that Derek. It was hard to put my lab down. And my other dog didn't know what to do without him. Just give the other dog some attention and all will go well.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Sorry to hear this... I have a dog Mollie who is half shepherd/chow and she's 18 years old. Blind, very arthritic and can barely get around. According to the vet she's not in any pain, so we make her as comfortable as possible. I ain't looking forward to her end...

Derek, I've had to make this decision twice, and both times it's harder than I've ever imagined. My dogs are like family to me, too. I feel for ya bro. Some of the hardest times are just sitting there thinking of what you used to do at a certain time of the day. Just remember the good times...

My black lab that I've had for 12 years is getting "tired eyes." I dread the day that I know will be coming soon. I pray that I just find her in the yard lying peacefully one morning opposed to the decision you had to make, Derek.

I take comfort in knowing that I supplied her a life of love and friendship that she may not have had if I hadn't adopted her.

Sorry to hear about your loss. Cancer is a nasty thing that will affect almost everybody alive in one way or another. Whether it's you or a loved one (pets included), we all know or will know, somebody with cancer.

Sorry to hear this. I had to put one down 2 years back that I got my wife for our 1st valentines day. She was crushed and I was to. Now my Bassett is 12 years old and getting slow. Hate the thought of letting him go someday.

sorry for your loss. as hard as it was, i think you did the right thing. I had a doberman who lived to 17 years. I couldn't make the decision you did and unfortunately I think she probably suffered more than she deserved because of it.
