Night Time sounds.....

When you are sitting on your porch smoking a cigar and drinking your beverage of choice, what sounds do you hear?

I live half a block from the local firestation, so alot of times I hear trucks racing by. Normally, after nightfall, they drive by with all the lights flashing but they keep the sirens mute in order to avoid annoying their neighbors.

Occasionally, if the firemen and the paramedics are in a big enough hurry, they will drive by with lights and sirens. Even if it is after midnight.

Tonight I have been on the front porch smoking a cigar for about an hour and a half, and all I have heard is the "Ghetto Birds".

I used to live in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, and all I used to hear was Owls.....

Police helicopters flying overhead at low altitudes every 5 minutes. There are only two, but they are doing orbits so one is overhead every two and a half minutes, and they have their spotlights on.

What do you people hear when smoking a cigar before you go to bed?

I hear the freight trains about a mile behind my place, ther is a major intersection and they are always on the horns. I dont here the getto bird too ofter, i guess I must be in a well behaived neighborhood.

My neighbors dogs barking. Actually I have a little woods left in my back yard that have not been developed for condos yet. So I hear a lot of animals. Also hear a train since I'm a mile from the tracks and a lot of sirens since I'm a few yards from a major route. But all in all its nice and relaxing.

My house backs up to a really large, fast moving creek (about 10 to 12 feet across) so we have a LOT of animals roaming around, many of which make quite a bit of noise. I typically hear ducks quacking, geese squawking, and lots of "splash-downs" of those big birds landing in the water. It's also not uncommon to hear random animals (raccoons? opossums?) screaming and fighting.

Naturally, since we live in the city, we hear a lot of neighborhood dogs barking. I will also occasionally hear an airplane or helicopter, or any number of emergency vehicle sirens. Every now and then, you can even hear a gunshot or two. LOL

But for the most part, sitting in my backyard is really peaceful and relaxing. As long as you don't mind ducks and geese. :grin:

I live just a few blocks from the hospital, so I hear the ambulances and other emergency vehicles running at all hours of the night. The train tracks are about a half mile south of me, it's funny, I hardly hear it anymore. Living there for a few years, you just learn to tune it out.

I hate living in the city.



Out at the farm, I hear coyotes howling, the donkeys rustling around in the pasture as they graze. I see foxes, owls, deer, turkey, and other neat night creatures all the time. Occasionally I can hear a truck roar by on the highway. I have to walk down the hill just to see the lights from my neighbors house. Sometimes I'll go and sit out in the back pasture or on the south fenceline, where I can see my neighbors cows graze in the moonlight, often times I'll see deer grazing along with them. You can see all kinds of critters going in to the stock tank for water on a bright moonlit night.

Typical large city sounds (although I'm almost in the 'burbs) ...

Commuter train (1/2 mile)
Firetrucks (3/4 mile)
Airplane (8 miles)
Hip-Hop / RAP idiots with 5 Megawatt stereos (occasionally)
Birds, dogs, kids, etc ...

But I can tune it all out in the backyard with my mp3 player, a smoke and a good drink.

I built a large deck on the back of my house and installed a hot tub down in the deck.
Our subdivision is basicly a loop around road that cuts into a cow pasture. Aint living in the Kentucky countryside wonderful?
Sometimes I sit out there and with the jets on it drowns everything out. Sometimes I sit out there and leave the jets off and listen to the cows moo. I also hear coyotes,dogs,bats and other animals.
The road leading to my subdivision is a county road as such there is not much trafficeven in the daytime. So at night there is almost no traffic.

I smoke in my living room, on my nice leather couch, so I hear the TV and my aquarium LOL..

Seriously though, when I sit on my apartments porch and prop my feet up with my puppy in my lap or at my feet I hear the cars driving by in the parking lot and on the street about 200yards away. I hear the occasional sirens screaming by (I also have a fire substation just up the road from me, and live on a major artery off of I35), I hear the loudspeakers and such from sporting events at the high school occasionally. I can also hear the local strays calling out for some action, or rummaging through the dumpsters for food. i spose that is about all that I can think to write for now...Hope it wast entierly ilegible.

The house in Peters Creek is set on a hillside off the Glenn Highway but thanks to a little distance and a lot of trees, traffic sounds are pretty subdued. I haven't heard it this year but last summer there was some construction working going on across the Glenn and the heavy equipment was a little annoying.

Otherwise, I mostly hear a little wind in the trees and birds...usually the yank-yank-yank of Red-Breasted Nuthatches and the chick-a-dee-dee-dee of...well...Chickadees. Every once in a while, a cranky squirrel has a few words for me. For musical accompaniment, there are the neighborhood sled dog teams. As near as I can figure, there are two places within a mile of the house that keep 'em, so we sometimes get the yodels in stereo.

In the background...very faint...is the low hum of the Mosquito Magnet.

I actually have a pretty good sized yard now, so on my deck i can hear animals and sometimes the interstate about a mile and a half away.. during the winter i imagine the sound of the traffic will increase a bit but it is not too bad now..

I like it, it is peaceful...

But as drew said, when i was living in the condo there was still nothing better than having the puppy on the deck listening to the traffic below..

A few birds chirping in the woods behind my place. The occasional llama. (Is it a bah sound they make or scream?) That's about it. Pretty secluded considering I'm in the burbs

We live close to a lemon and avocado grove so we hear a bit of wild life. Coyotes, owl, mourning dove in the early evening. We build a pond with a waterfall and stream. When this is running its all you hear.

During the day the people behind us have little kids that sound like they are killing each other all day. Lots of screeching and hollering. That why I wait till their bed time to smoke outside.

Very true statement most places. We TRY and be quiet anytime when people might be sleeping like 9pm'ish. Heavy traffic will also determine our nighttime siren use to clear the response route. Also if we have a strong suspicion we are headed to a working fire, then the siren blares.

Our house at night, not much noise at all. The small town rolls up around dark. The occasional loud muffler car or blasting stereo is all at night. During the day we hear lots of birds chirping, squirrels munching, some dogs barking, and people doing yard work. During the summer, a gently hum of the pool filter motor as background white noise.

Do the sounds I normally hear really qualify for this thread? The sun doesn't set until 10:49 tonight and it won't be good'n dark until just after midnight. So, unless I'm smokin' really late, I guess they aren't technically "night time" sounds. :grin:

Just thought I would clear up any mis-understanding, I hated living up in the hills.

Owls hooting all night, trees falling on the road in the winter and blocking me in.There were bears wandering around on the property on the way to the neighbors apple orchard.

One night my very large semi-feral cat was crawling all over my head in the middle of the night, terrified, while some wild animal was prowling around on the porch.

Only one bar within reasonable distance, twelve single women in a town of about three thousand. And most of them were pretty ugly until after a few shots.

I like helicopters and firetrucks and people walking home from bars late at night. It sounds comforting to me.

Mocking birds, on the other hand......

Hahaha.. i forgot about the mockingbird.. i have a red headed woody mother fuckin woodpecker in my backyard every morning..
