If I'm not smoking inside, I'll sometimes go out to the back porch. Every once in a while the above ground portion of the Orange line T goes by as it's only a few blocks away. If it's early afternoon, the next door neighbor's kids are out and usually howling and creating a ruckus. I think they run a day care of some sort, as there are always a billion kids out and about.

Other than that, the normal city sounds apply. Although this apartment is on a one way circle in a better part of the city than the last one, which was just bordering on lower income housing and on a somewhat heavily travelled road. It's nice being able to sleep at night without hearing fart can equipped civics blasting by at 3 in the morning.

I miss living in Westchester county, NY as a kid. My parents built that house, and we were in the middle of the woods. In fact, the closest neighbors we had up the hill have recently sold their land and it's now home to a Wolf Conservation Center. It would have been interesting to live there if the program was there back then as I spent a lot of time in the woods behind and around the house.

This afternoon there was a Police helicopter circling over the middle school about two blocks from here, using their "Giant Voice" loudspeakers.

They were asking residents to be on the lookout for a 6 year old boy, about 3 feet tall, with blond hair. Missing for 6 hours, might be with some older guy, it was hard to make out what they were saying.

I hope the child gets home ok.......

On the other hand, the two humpback whales that got lost and ended up in the Sacramento River started heading back to the San Francisco bay today. They started following one of the ships that was supposed to be trying to lead them home.

The last whale that made it into the Sacramento River ended up about 30 miles from here. The news broadcasters named him "Humphrey the Humpbacked Whale".

Humphrey got lost sometime around 1984 or so, I don't really remember. They named the current whales, but I cant remember their names. I suck.

I hope the whales make it back into the ocean. There were two humpbacks, a mother and a calf.

I watched a show on the Discovery channel, and they said that pregnant mothers hung out in Mexican waters until they gave birth to the calves. After the calves were born, the mothers stayed in southern waters for up to 5 months before they started swimming up to Alaskan waters to feed.

That means that the cow has not eaten in at least 6 months or so, so every week her and the calf were in the river meant that she was getting closer and closer to starving to death.

Yesterday, May 19th, my gf and I stopped off in West Sacramento to see the whales before we went to my little sisters birthday party. The mother actually "broached", which is a fancy way of saying that a 50 foot fish jumped out of the water. It was pretty God's damned cool.....

I like this town.

:)
