just finished working a drunk driving check point ,,, the plan was to close down at 0200 hours.

well, at 0100 hours, we had a vehicle run the check point, like, accelerating through a coned-off one lane road.

K-9 cruiser was the first out. now, i'm about 20 yards from the chase cruiser, and nobody moves for it. so I did! and now i'm #2 in the pursuit!! probably a 40 mile chase in all - city streets, multiple freeways, city streets... finally, the suspect car collided with a sheriff's cruiser, flipped a 180, and bounced off a bb court fence. driver fled on foot. is getting stiched up right now due to mighty fine dog punctures. we took both passengers, juveniles, at gunpoint, eventually drove them to the station and released to parents. it was the 17yr old mom's car, who she let gangbanging badguy drive it! and she wasn't a bad kid. just a real stupid choice!!

San Diego Police Heli ABLE was with us for most of it! all video taped!! i'll be getting a dvd very soon!! media was on scene in a snap, so, i may be on TV tomorrow!!

so, now i'm waiting for the adrenelan crash! ha!!

Glad you are ok, I hate to see those crashes on tv, the ones involving innocent bystanders or cops trying to keep up on the chase and lose control of the vehicle.

The cop who went Rambo and pulled the "STOP NOW" maneuver doesn't sound too bright though!

Until I saw this I was excited about playing golf this morning.
 Yeah, my day is lookin' pretty darn tame as well now!

All in a day's work, right Jeff?

While I can understand the potential tragedies that are waiting around every corner in a police chase situation, I don't like to see law enforcement refuse to chase down a suspect, or have to abandon a chase due to department policy. Why should we send a message to a criminal that if they just run, they'll let them go?

Nice job jw!

It's too bad the driver of the vehicle wasn't DOA. It's idiots like this that get drunk or just go on joy rides and cause accidents that hurt or kill other people, while they walk away with a few scratches.

Hell of a story, Jeff. I'm glad that neither you nor anyone else got seriously hurt. Stupid kid deserved those dog bites.

I have to ask though, what are your police department guidelines for setting up check points like this?

CA Vehicle Code 2814.1 gives local law enforcement the authority. the guidelines are set forth by the State Supreme Court. Grants (ie, MADD) pay for the activity and clarifies the mission.

They have those in Cincinnati quite often and even announce where it will be on the radio. They typically put it right down the road from one of the more popular gang-banger night clubs. The Bengals are really good at finding these checkpoints.
