Percolators

A friend of my mom's asked me to look around for one as he lost his during the move to Palm Springs. He enjoys a good, strong cup of coffee in the morning and his current drip maker just doesn't cut it.

Anybody still use these? Any difference between stovetop vs. electric?

My dad has found more than a couple at garage sales or thrift shops. It couldn't hurt to look in the paper and call ahead of time so you don't waste your time driving around.

I wouldn't think there'd be any difference in flavor between electric and stovetop since they both do the same thing. Electric would be easier since they're kind of set-and-forget. If you put a perc on the stove and then hop in the shower and forget about it, it'll just keep perking into tar...or worse.
If he decides to go stove top I'd just recommend that he get one that's either stainless or ceramic coated steel. There were a lot of aluminum stovetop percolaters out there and there's concern about aluminum contributing to Alzhiemer's. Just about every electric model I've seen has been stainless steel.

Farberware makes an excellent electric percolator, they have a 2-4 cup and a larger one. Perks the coffee and then goes into warm mode. They run in the forty dollar range. I've been using one (2-4 cup) at the office for at least a decade. Old school baby, old school.

Percolators make great coffee! My parents swear by theirs and I have to agree.

I'd second Cliff's suggestion of garage sales or thrift shops. Ebay might also be a good way to find one. Parts can be iffy, as my Dad tossed out the stem pump to his glass percolator by accident and could not find a replacement anywhere, so he purchased a stainless steel one.

I have one of these too. A funnel and a coffee filter works better though.

One of the guys on the camping trip this weekend brought a perc and that made some gawd-awful coffee. Sure was glad I brought my MSR single cup filter. I think my next coffee maker will be a Moka pot. Now that's some strong coffee.

I agree. My parents used one camping when i was a kid. One thing that stick out in my mind. Thanks for the flash back.
