so, they plan on raising $35 billion over the next five years,,, and this money is coming from where?

"But the costs would be fully covered by an increase in tobacco taxes, which would bring health benefits of its own by discouraging smoking."

that is one expensive smoke!!

I would be shocked if it passed..
Passed it has... both houses!

If W fails to deliver on his veto threat, or the H of R scrounges up enough votes for an override and this thing becomes law... pftttttttttt.

Then, I know at least one stogie lover who`ll be defecting to the darkside.

Probably be cheaper then:smokingme

I thought they knocked the $10 cap down to $3....
That's what the guys at my B&M were saying anyway.

Yes, it is a $3 cap now.

Two seperate versions have passed the House and Senate, seperately. They have yet to create a single bill from the two versions for presentation to the President where he will liekly veto it.

I love how the guy states it is fully funded by a tobacco tax and then hails it for helping people quit.

Duh, if people quit smoking the funding disappears. :eyequiver

I am glad in AZ they have the strictist smokign laws except maybe hawaii but our politicians all voted no and Senator McCain if voted president vows to fight the law to the death, ( be better than the other fight he wants) I have heard they have the cap down to $3 but they changed it to it will be a floor tax, meaning that everything sitting on the sotres shelves, TAXED, also Bush bless his texas heart has vowed to veto it as he beleives that a class of taxpayers should not carry the burden of what a whole economy is doing to health care, so if you vote for Clinton beware you will see the smokers atacked again, your best vote is McCain or the smoker guy Obama I think his name is,,

From what I understand about the current situation on SCHIP, the FLOOR TAX has been stricken from the bills.

The proposed tax rate increase on cigars is about 250% (same as cigarettes) but the CAP is being raised from $0.50 to $3.00.

And yes, Bush is still vowing to VETO the bill.
