You believe right! Richard Matheson wrote "I Am Legend" in the early 50s I think and "The Last Man on Earth" starring Vincent Price was the first film adaptation. Charlton Heston reprised the role of Robert Neville in "The Omega Man." Now we get treated to a new version with Will Smith as the vampire hunter.
