So today I buried my Father-in-law. Well, we actually didn't bury him because my In-laws bought crypts, so instead he will be in a wall about 15 feet up. I bring this up not get your sympathy (though in advance, I appreciate your condolences) but to discuss what you want done for you when you go to the Great Herf In The Sky. I remembered today how much I hate the traditional funeral service. How much I hate the visitation. And while I always enjoy hearing the Word, a service at a funeral home never really speaks to me. I don't want people to go through that when I am gone.

Even so, I also firmly believe that funerals are for the people left behind, not the one who has gone on. So in the end it will be what ever helps my family deal with the loss. But if I have my way it will be something like the following.

I want to be cremated, with a few cigars, as kind of a last herf. I'd like my ashes put in one of my humidors. I'm not quite sure what to do with them after that ( dump them in the ocean, till them into the garden, put them in the litter box?) If you have any ideas please post them. Then I would like all my family and friends to get together for a nice dinner (It's not hard to find a table for 4) and drink some of my wine and if they want to, smoke some of my cigars. I would rather be remembered while they are doing something enjoyable rather than something miserable.

So what about you?

I used to want to be cremated and then smoked!! Boy was I stupid..
But still going with the burnt theme, I suppose I want to be put in a few small "pouches" for my friends.and as you stated the same few could go through my stash, to see if any they would like . and the rest I guess my wife would keep

I'm with you, Mickey. Although I don't think I'd like my ashes scattered from a coffee can like Donny in The Big Lebowski.

I'd like my boys, to take me to Pebble Beach. Then find a sand trap that has a beautiful view of the ocean. I'd have a great place to be around the ocean and a golf course-how much better could it get. They would of course have to do it, when no one was looking. I'd be good to go, till they changed the sands in the traps.

I am going the cremation route as well. My goal is to be spread over someplace in Wrigley Field. They conduct tours on off days and my wife says she'll do a walk through on the field and spill the ashes as she walks.

That's the way I want to go....

Oh hell, I dunno...I really haven't thought about my own death much, ya know?

But being cremated with some cigars isn't a bad idea; it has a nice ring to it.

And again, sorry for your family loss.

I have thought about this. I want to be cremated and have my ashes spread over some tobacco fields in Cuba. Preferably at Robaina's farm.

Sorry for your loss.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss.

I agree with your thoughts on the ceremony...I don't like the visitation and the funeral service, but I do understand that it's for those who are left behind.

I'd like a rememberance party, where my family and friends can tell funny stories about me...I want them to be laughing, not crying. Lots of beer and cigars going around.

I also want to be cremated and my ashes scattered from Shoshone Point on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. It's my favorite place in the world in life, so I'd like to be scattered there after I've left this world.

When I go don't cry for me
In my Father's arms I'll be
The wounds this world left on my soul
Will all be healed and I'll be whole.

Sun and moon will be replaced
With the light of Jesus' face
And I will not be ashamed
For my Savior knows my name.

It don't matter where you bury me
I'll be home and I'll be free
It don't matter where I lay
All my tears be washed away.

Sorry for your loss

Cremation for me, with at least one cigar.
My wife and I agreed to allot $10,000. for a party. Each guest would be asked to submit a remembrence of their relationship with me. A funny story, a lesson learned, or just time we spent together. The humidor and wine cellar would be opened, but no "take home" allowed, only what is to be consumed on site.
No tears, unless tears of laughter, and joy. A celebration of a life well lived, surrounded by those that meant the most to me while I was here.

Ashes to be spread in Jamaica and Italy, and any other future sites that may play a part in our lives.

However, for me, I think cremation would be just fine. Adding a couple of smokes would be a cool touch. As far as the ashes go....I figure dump them in the waves off the jetty at Newport. Right into a big swell at the wedge. You guys can have all my remaining smokes.

I haven't really thought about it, but I remember reading a funny line by a Washington Post collumnist (Gene Weingarten) who wanted to be buried at a cemetary in DC that was turned into a dog park:

Article here

"I have instructed my children about my wishes: a small stone, bearing only my name, my dates of birth and death, and this inscription: 'A funny man who loved dogs.' The stone will be in the shape of a fire hydrant."

When I go ... take whatever body parts can be reused and then burn the rest.

But please, keep my remains away from Keith Richards.
