I havent finished my basement yet and was wondering if anyone has a room dedicated to cigar smoking in their basement? Is there even a way to build a room and not have the smell of smoke in the house? The wife would kill me if I spent all the $$$$$ to build a room and the smell of cigar smoke lingered anywhere else in the house. My father inlaw insists that this cannot be done as he has a friend who tried.

there are quite a few people on here that have a room such as this. just have it well sealed and good ventilation directly outside. and maybe and air purifier and you shouldn't be to bad off.

of course there's a way. I have plans to do the same thing. In my basement i have the floor beams of the first floor exposed where i can see the subflooring of the first floor. I also have well windows in the basement that are about 18" x 30". I'm going to drywall the ceiling and walls and when i tape and mud the seams, the room will be "air tight" meaning that the smoke will have nowhere to go but either out the door or the window. In one of those windows i'm gonig to install a filtered vent. The vent will draw air, or cigar smoke out and the filter will keep it from actually taking the air our and makeing it cold in the winter. The filtered vent will actually be some sort of smoke eater. They can be had for a few hundered bucks. I havent' done real thorough research on them yet, but i know from talking to people they do exist and they dont' cost 1000's of dollars.

I expect my whole project to coast around $2K +/- $500 and i'll have a room about 12 x 15 complete with flat screen TV and recliners and seating for up to 6 people. 4 people would be ideal, but 6 could fit. i've got a full size beer fridge in the basement already, so it will be right outside the smoking room.

Fortunately for me, my wife enjoys smoknig the occassional cigarette, but she hates the way the house smells for a few hours after we smoke one in the basement, so a room design for smoking is ideal for both of us.

I plan to start my in the Spirng sometime.

As for your father-in-law...he'lll never be on your side. He'll swear he smells smoke before you ever build the room.

Mybe I'll just do it anyways, cigar smoke smell or not. I was planing on a 18x22 room. Fan vented outside along w/a smoke eater/air purifier machine. Leather couch and chair and of course a beautiful flat screen. This room will also double as my dining room and bedroom
If you have a room like this let me know how your "Smell" situation is going.

Remeber to remove the carpeting, drapes or cloth couches as these all tend to hold odors. Keep it all wood and leather.

For the smoke, I think a well ventillated room (plus well sealed!) should suffice. This might be a hassle, but maybe make it an outside entrance only (obviously, I don't know if you have an outside entrance, so you might have to build one ) if you're affraid the smoke might escape through a door into the rest of the house.

Make sure whatever fan you go with exchanges all the air in the room frequently. Also, if you are sealing up the door, you will need to have some air coming into the room from outside or somewhere, so that you don't have a vacuum. If you can, have the exhaust fan in your ceiling, and have the motor in another spot, otherwise it may get loud.

Thanks N2, thats what I was looking for although I dont understand why he didnt put the TV in the room?
I fugure he has a family that will be using that basement as well. a 50" screen and volume control from the room works well as a comprimise.

Need room for the Pool/Poker table...
At the very least a poker table. I'm looking at a room big enough for a large leather couch and chair w/ottaman. TV inside the room, surround sound, dark wood interior. Now if I could only get this done by The Masters.
