Kidnappings of U.S. citizens on rise : Sophisticated Mexican groups plot abductions

Organized, well-financed and violent Mexican kidnapping cells are targeting a growing number of U.S. citizens visiting communities popular with San Diegans and other California residents.

Last year, at least 26 San Diego County residents were kidnapped and held for ransom in Tijuana, Rosarito Beach or Ensenada, local FBI agents overseeing the cases said yesterday. In 2006, at least 11 county residents had been kidnapped in the three communities. “Some of the 26 were recovered, some were hurt and some were killed,” said agent Alex Horan, who directs the FBI's violent-crime squad in San Diego.

“It's not a pleasant experience. Victims have reported beatings, torture and there have been rapes. Handcuffs and hoods over the head are common,” he said. When contrasted to the 40 million border crossings made every year at the San Ysidro Port of Entry, the kidnapping numbers are small. Most of the victims have business interests or family members in Mexico. But authorities said anyone planning to visit Mexico should be cautious.

The number of San Diego County residents kidnapped in Tijuana, Rosarito Beach and Ensenada rose sharply last year:

2008: 2

2007: 26

2006: 11

2005: 10

The stuff that went down at last years Baja 1000, was unbelievable. A lawless environment, filled with corrupt cops/government official's.

Guess were lucky dprice made it back from his trip down.

We had a golf trip planned later this year, been going to the same place for 17 yr. All the boys decided, it may be in our best interests to keep us and our families on this side o the border.

Hell they(mexican nationals) come across the border and arm rob the dune buggy crowd in the Imperial Sand Dunes all the time-then flee back to their side. A border patrolman was killed recently when he was ran over during one of these incidents.

Pretty brave mofo's. :disappoin

Wow, that's nuts. All we saw was calm and peacful. Of course two day sprior to our trip Gangsters shot up the poice chief's car, killing one of his boddy gaurds. My guess is you see a family driving in a 10 year old Jeep, that is not who you are kidnapping. They say driving a late modle luxury SUV is like signing a death/carjacking warrant. They have you spotted and tagged from the second you cross the border. Also, when traveling internationaly you need to be cautious no matter where you go. Don't wear jewelery, flashy cloths, don't flash money, stay alert.

0.000065% of all people crossing the border at the San Ysidro Port of Entry are a victim of kidnapping.

I would think the odds of dying in a car accident on the way down there, or even natural causes, would be higher then the odds of being kidnapped.

Just sayin'

i dont want to sound like a dumb a$$ but what does this have to do with the price of lobster. :dunno:
Just past the border about 20 miles is a fishing village caled Puerto Nuevo. The whole cosat along there is known for it's spiney lobster population. They don't have claws like Maine Lobster's and are generally smaller, but oh so tasty. You can get the full mael withh several tails for 10-15 bucks with a beer included. Here is the thread i put up after our trip down this past X-mas. The pics of us all on the balcony over looking the ocean are in Puerto Nuevo.

Wouldn't they be less likely to kidnap you if they knew you were a cop? I dunno, but if I was looking to kidnap someone and hold them for ransom, it wouldn't be a U.S. government employee trained to kick some ass.

My neighbors were driving their old 1982 Chevy full-size van down in Mexico to go caving, and the local cops pulled them over (looking for bribes and all that good stuff they do down there). One of the 8 or so guys in my neighbor's group had a hat that said 'The Police'. You know, like, Sting's band. Anyway, the local cops saw this guy with his Police hat and left very quickly. Granted, it was in the mid-1980's, and things could very well have changed a bit, but I still would hope a cop would be the last guy to get messed with.

I guess if you really wanted to go you could wear that awesome yellow shirt of yours. Nobody would even think about holding you for ransom!
