N.J. motorcycle cops seriously injured in Orangetown crash
6:15 PM EST, February 7, 2008

police, truck were driving; UPDATES with more details from police; MAY be led.

ORANGETOWN, N.Y. (AP) _ At least two New Jersey motorcycle officers were seriously injured Thursday in an accident involving a box truck.

The officers were among a group of motorcycle police from various Bergen County police agencies who participated in a funeral escort, said Orangetown Police Detective Lt. John McAndrew.

The officers were riding north near a bend on Route 9W at about 2:15 p.m. when at least one collided with the southbound truck, with others grounding their bikes as they tried to get of the way.

The two officers were transported to area hospitals. The injuries were serious but didn't appear to be life-threatening, McAndrew said.

McAndrew said one of the officers was in danger of losing his leg.

The cause of the crash was still under investigation Thursday evening, McAndrew said.

At 6 p.m., 9W remained closed in both directions near the crash site. But police told area news stations that the road was expected to reopen soon.

On another note, I like the last few sentences in your quote...

Goes without saying. I think every rider just assumes (or should) that every driver is out to kill him. We're wrong most of the time and, hopefully, can avoid the situations when we're right.
