A Starbucks recently opened about 20 minutes away from me, and they really need these 3 hours. Maybe they can learn to make something right.

Apparently they are concerned that McDonald's - yes, McDonald's - is honing in on their market. There was a blurb on MSNBC about this last week.

Personally, I go out of my way to avoid Starbucks. The coffee is mediocre at best, and the price is very high. If possible, I recommend supporting smaller, local shops.

Just my 2 cents ... :noemotion

I didn't read the article, but they actually need these classes to try and make a better cup and fool the consumer into thinking the price is worth it.

McDonald's is nothing to laugh about and their premium coffee IS taking market share away from Starbucks. Consumers will flock to McDonalds since they think the coffee is better and they get it for a cheaper price.

Uh, unless I'm wrong.... didn't Starbucks go to super automatic espresso machines recently (within the past year or so)? So this 3 1/2 hour training of baristas to "pull the perfect shot"...is to what? push the button with more flare? They made a big mistake by installing super autos in all of their locations and eliminating in store grinding in a lot of them. Wonder if this will help.....

Maybe they're simply not wearing enough flair?:scratchhe

Actually, I think that *$'s going against McD's is foolish on their part. I think they'd be smarter to separate themselves from the fast food image rather than emulate it with things like their $1 coffee idea they're floating out in Seattle.

That's what the 3 hour closing is about. My gf works for sbucks, apparently the "lessons" will be for all employees to make a more consistent product. That's why there is so much disparity between people's opinions of starbucks. In addition to personal preference (like in cigars too), because of the rapid expansion of the company there is a consistency problem from store to store and person to person. So, that's why they're doing this. We'll see if it makes a difference.

I believe the founder just got back on board as CEO, that might help bring Starbucks back to their roots.

I noticed that they switched to those super auto machines when I went in with a co-worker (I don't normally go to Starbucks) and I just shook my head in amazement. I couldn't believe they had them. Ugh.

The coffee roaster by my house uses traditional machines and great beans that they don't char the hell out of; they make a vastly superior espresso than any Starbucks I've ever been to.

So meh, I don't really care what Starbucks does!

They should offer the $50 AND $100 DOLLAR CUP OF COFFEE INSTEAD!
