Heartflet over Kitty Litter

I know there has been a lot of debate over Kitty Litter crystals (KL) and heartfelt beads. As I am setting up my new wine-o-dor I researched the hell out of this issue and this is my thoughts. The wine cooler I am using is a 16 bottle Avanti with an interior dimension of a little over 1.5 cubic feet. From the heartfelt website I need less then 1/2 a pound of beads to get my humidity right but in factoring a little bit over (which I read is a good call) lets say ½ pound. After careful consideration between KL and heartfelt beads I went with Heartfelt and here is way.

1) It has been said that both have the same chemical make up? In terms of the actual beads OK but what is not covered (that I have seen) is what goes into the heartfelt beads before we get them to reproduce certain humidity levels. There is some prep work that Heartfelt has done otherwise there would not be 3 different levels of humidity offered in their beads. KL has no prep work which leaves you to do it. I’ll spend an extra 5 bucks to have someone do the prep work who knows how to prep and beads and has been doing if for years.

2) A 7lb box of KL is +/- $15…A ½ pound bag of Heartfelt beads is +/- $20 shipped. From what I understand the beads are suppose to last forever as long as they are properly taken care of. So…since cost is not an issue (relatively the same) and I only need ½ pound, I went with the tried and true heartfelt beads rather then the questionable KL. In my position I would do nothing with the extra 6.5lbs of KL so it would really not be much of a cost savings.

3) As a noob I wanted to support a fellow BOTL. Start this hobby out with good Karma I guess you would say. I would rather support a boutique shop who is making a product for us fellow cigar smokers and knows what we are looking for then some huge pet supply company that has no relevance to the cigar smokers of America. And! For the record Heartfelt’s customer service is awesome. I placed my order this morning at 12.38 and got an email confirming my order has been shipped by 10:00 AM.

So if you are a noob like me and you are looking into this topic my recommendation would be to go with Heartfelt. I only have about 20 sticks right now and with the new Wine-O-Dor I should be able to store up to 200 so I have a long ways to go. I’ll get there one day but for now $20 is nothing to be sure that my smokes will be just right.

A 16 bottle coolidor is only 1.5 cubic feet? Seems a little small. I am getting ready to get mine together and I will use more than a 1/2 lb. I have that in my desk top. The more the merrier. Just hard to beleive that you only have 1.5 c/ft.

What Steve said. For the record, I've used both. There is no wrong answer IMO. You do what you are comfortable with. And supporting Heartfelt is certainly something that I'm comfortable with.

This is the math I got from Heartfelt.

The dimensions are 14Wx12Dx16H.

14x12x16 = 2,688

2,688 / 1,728 (number of inches in a cubic foot) = 1.555

1.555 / 5 (number of cubic feet per pound) = .311

So I got .5lbs figuring I would be +/-39% over what i needed.

If i ever get a pimp status collection like I'm sure you have I may give it a go. The point being for noobs like myself that only have lame collections and only need .5lbs...why not support someone that supports us and go with something that you know is going to work. If all you need is .5lbs the only savings is maybe $5. Now if you have a huge collection and needed the other 6.5lbs I could see why you would want to search out alternatives as you would be paying over $200 for Heartfelt VS $15 for KL.

I love these threads, it is like cello on, cello off.

I've used both for years and both work fine for humidifing (sp) but if you are wanting to reduce humidity KL is 10x more effective and this is why I like it better. I have multiple coolers and with the CO or Hydra can "charge" KL in a day or two. I would recommend beads if you are, 1) just starting out, 2) don't have a CO/Hydra, 3) don't live where the humidity can run 100%+ for months on end.

I've not used Heartfelt beads but the Climmax beads from 4+ years ago are getting smaller and smaller and will be dust soon. They still work but I don't think beads will last forever. At less than $5 a yr they are a good deal.

use what you feel comfortable with but like Cello on, Cello off It doesn't matter.
