I have often heard that the Cuban Rollers create their magic with the larger ring vitolas however my experience tells me that the smaller rings are usually the flavor powerhouses. Bolivar and Partagas are my fav CC lines and although I go bonkers for the robustos in both lines, I feel the lonsdales give the more prototypical flavor that each brand is known for.

I got my hands on a box of Bolivar Inmensas March 07. When I lifted the lid of the box it was like walking through the door of Willie Wonka's Factory ... the not so subtle chocolate aromas made the hairs on my neck stand at attention. I couldn't stop opening the box and taking a HUGE whiff. My wife kept looking at me like i was crazy.

In an incredible display of discipline, I put the little lovelies asleep for 6 month and tried the first of the batch last night. After looking around I choose the darkest of the bottom layer and made a surgical percision cut. Even after 6 months, the overwhelming chocolate themes still remained. The pre light draw what a bit tight. I toasted the lady and took my first draw. I only way I can describe it is that somebody loaded a musket with cashews, dark cocoa, pepper, sumatra coffee and nutmeg , placed the barrel in my mouth and blasted that poupouri of flavors into my mouth. INCREDIBLE .

Now, the patience factor kicks in. I duly waited 60 seconds between puffs. My concern of a tight draw was unwarranted. She smoked like a dream. The first third of the Boli was kinda similar to the first puff. As she burned towards the middle the sweetness factor began to fade and the pepper and dark coffee tones began to dominate. Being a bit of a sneaky little beast, the Inmensa slowly began to change themes as I approached the final third. The chocolate and nutmeg started to creep back into the picture but the cashew flavors so dominate upon lighting were nowhere to be found. I must have got a little excited because tar started to accumulate... at about the 3" mark I put her down , all the fault of my carelessness ( eagarness).

What a great smoke. I think 3-4 years in solitary confinement will turn these Bolivars into classics. There is nothing revolutionary here ... just 100% pure Bolivar flavor. As much as I love the Royal Coronas and the Corona Gigantes, I'd have to cast my vote to the Inmensa for the Boli Hall of fame.

Nice review. I have been reluctant to smoke the smaller ring cigars, but a review like this tells me that I may be missing something.

In my opinion You have been missing something. The smaller rings often delivers a more concentrated flavor and a more pleasant smoke overall. Try some small ring smokes You won't regret it!

Coming from a man who lives in a place where CC's are legal... I am going to take you at your word. I have a couple of Lancero's that were gifted to me and I am going to give them a whirl.

My reluctance to try them in the past has been somewhat based on my "macho-man" (or that's what my sister tells me and my brother-in-law) mentality. You see, I am 6'1, 290 lbs, and the thought of dangling a twizzle stick has turned me off.

Okay, Lars, you have drawn me out and I am going to give it a shot.

Remember at one time Fidel smoked only Churchills ? Well, for the guy who smoked any type of cigar at anytime graduated to lanceros . Litto Gomez , who can order his employees to make him whatever his heart desires, choose a lancero as his personal smoke.

Give them a try !!!!

Personally for me the mystique and greatness of Cuban cigars lies in the thin ring gauges. Its amazing to think how much flavour is packed in those thin little sticks. I think this is what really separates Cubans from non-Cubans, the complexity of a think Cuban is unparalleled when compared to its non-Cuban counterpart. You guys should try the LGC Medaille d' Or No.1

Great review!

I have also latey noticed that smaller ring gauges pack more punch. A case in point is the Saint Luis Rey...The Serie A is slightly stronger and has a more complex flavor profile than the Regios, and that's only a hair difference in the ring!

The Juan Lopez #1 is slightly smaller than the #2, but the #1 smokes better with more complexity as well.

Thanks again for the review :)

Very nice review CSMoFo. After reading it I can't wait to smoke 1 of the 2 that I have in my humidor as I have yet to try one. So far from all the Bolivars I've tried, I also like the BCG the best overall even though I've enjoyed some excellent BBF's and BCE's.

Finally got around to smoking this cigar and you are right they are great!! It started out a little slow with the basic Bolivar flavor but after the first inch all the way to about the last inch it was awsome for such a young stick. I could taste the cashew/cocoa/coffee like flavors that you mentioned as well. Now I found another great Bolivar to sock in the humi.

There is still a long run for me in becoming a cigar expert as you guys. But until then I am opened to new learning.

Excellent review of an excellent cigar. I have been enjoying a box of '97's as well. Very complex, filled with subtle changes in nuance, and classicly Bolivar all at the same time. I enjoy a BBF or RC as much as the next guy, but these Imensas are in a league of their own. I also happen to think the PC and the CE are fine smokes. In general I enjoy thinner ring cigars though. I like the wrapper to filler & binder ratio better. I find I can taste the wrapper more in the thinner cigar, a good thing in my opinion.
