1. Let's say you have a treestand right on the edge of property you lease and the land behind you has had activity the past year in regards to developement (landscaping phase). Therefore, there has been plenty of construction people that have seen your stand.

2. Someone steals your stand.

3. You put a note on the tree that the stand was in basically saying that they were caught on your game camera and they have 1 week to return the stand before the pictures are turned over to the authorities. This is a total bluff...you have no camera up but obviously they would not know whether you did or not. Add to the fact it would take a while to get the treestand down so if there was a camera, they most certainly would be caught on it.

4. Would the said thieves return the stand?

Also...note that it is a pretty secluded area. No road in sight from the scene of the crime.

It really depends on the person. I would say most would.

P.S. - Sucks about your stand.

Well...it is only 1 of 6 stands but it was a pretty hot spot in regards to deer movement. Of course, that might very well change with all the development occuring adjacent to the leased land.

It could be a blessing in disguise because:

1. The stand has been left up for 4 years so it was getting worn by the elements.
2. There is one spot where we don't have a stand that I have always wanted to put one.
3. I have been wanting to buy a tripod stand opposed to a ladder stand for awhile now...which is what I would buy for this other spot.

i would give the note a shot but if its secluded who knows if they will be back. and tripod stands are great. we have one and its ideal especially if you have open range to shoot a few hundred yards. got my last deer at 450 yards. good luck with your stand

There is also a lot of locals riding 4 wheelers back there so it could very well be one of them. If so, there is a good chance they would see the note. Dunno...

Oh, man. That area's getting developed?
The opposite side from where we shot the AK's. Remember when we shot the pistols near the stream that first time...into the hillside? It is the stand that would have been to our right.

Yep, that's what I was thinking. I believe you showed me that stand. It's a shame to hear the area is falling to development. Nowhere is safe I guess.

Good Luck on the Bluff, here in MN If u own the land then u have rights, other wise SOL, But here in MN , u have to take the tree stand down. If it is full blown stand ok to stay, if it is in a tree it has to come down at the end of each season (on your land or not) The CO's will luck it to the tree so u can't even use it ..... Safety Hazard....Good luck Bro

Wait....let me get this straight......you hunt in Virginia from a treestand? I thought you all shot from your truck window:stretchgr
You needed a new stand anyways. You probably shouldnt safely leave a stand in a tree all year round for more than a few years. I know this only because I was a Rep for Lone Wolf for a short time here in Ohio.

It can and does work. I did this with a pop-up blind I had stolen. A week or so later it was laying right where it was taken from.

My note included the "fact" that once I got the film developed I was going to the sherrif's dept with the pics. I gave an ultimatum that if my blind was back in 2 weeks, I'd forget it ever happened.

I keep the sign hanging on my wall as a "trophy".

I had a tree stand stolen from private land that I was given permission to hunt. The neighbors, who poached from the land all of the time, watched me set my stand up on a draw. I chained it to a 3' diameter tree and left for the night with expctations of a great morning hunt. Rubs and scrapes all around my stand.

The next morning, I walk up to a tree that was cut down via chainsaw and the stand was gone.

Knowing I would not see it again, I claimed it and the camera (hehe) that was also stolen. Insurance company placed the claim on my homeowners and wrote me a check.

A major bummer, but I got a new stand out of it. And then some.

I would still do the camera thing, just to mess with them.

You know, I never expected to get my blind back. I figured it was gone for good.

I also was guessing it was a couple of neighbor kids who have been known to cause a little trouble.....

I really just wanted to scare them a little bit.

Guess it worked better than expected....

Look at it like this... even if you don't get it back, they are gonna sweat it for a little while cause there will always be that seed of doubt that you have pics....

Give it a whirl......even if you don't get it back, they'll be breaking a sweat every time they see a patrol car in the area.
