Check with the timeshare folks in the area. Sometimes they have last minute cancellations that you can jump on real cheap.

Other than that, priceline.com and hotels.com has always been my best bet.

Good luck and enjoy.

Below is an excellent resource for lodging on all the islands of Hawaii. The authors have lots of good info and pictures of most places to stay and their opinions are generally from first-hand experiences. I'd also recommend buying the book for the additional info on places to eat, things to see, etc.

Last trip I made with my wife to Kauai we stayed for 5 days in a studio apt at the Kaapa Sands Resort in Lihu'e. It was a small place, but clean, comfortable and with a great ocean view. (Although I would not get an ocean view again due to the constant surf noise at night. ). The cost was $120/night.

We generally made our own breakfasts and ate on the balcony.
Right down the road is Scotty's BBQ - a great place for lunch.
Also close by is Coconuts where we had some excellent dinners.

One bad thing about the east side of the island is that the traffic is horrible during the morning + afternoon commute.

Please be sure to see the Na Pali Coast + Waimea Canyon while there. A helicopter is best and you can usually find special deals. The Princeville area on the north shore is beautiful (pricey homes, hotels, resorts) and worth a drive.

I'm sure you'll have a blast. Kauai is a great island ... much more laid back than Oahu and Maui. Glad I could help!
