So I was planning to relax tonight. The wife and I were going to walk downtown for some dinner, and after that I was hoping to sit on the porch with a nice smoke. Well, there was plenty of smoke:

Just as my wife and I were leaving, our friends (and upstairs neighbors) come bursting in to tell us that their apartment was on fire. We grabbed the dogs and the cat and waited outside while smoke billowed out of the second floor. Fortunately, nobody was hurt. Even more amazingly, our apartment appears to be fine. A light fixture below the burning kitchen was full of grimy water, but there's no other water damage downstairs, and no smoke damage. The Madison Fire Department responded quickly and kept this from turning into a bad situation.

The upstairs apartment has a lot of smoke and water damage, and the kitchen is destroyed, but most of their belongings will probably be salvageable. Red Cross arranged for a hotel room for them for the next few days, and they might be staying with us for a while after that. The little 20-count humidor I gave to my friend apparently survived, though it remains to be seen whether the cigars inside were damaged by the smoke. :dunno:

Tonight wasn't the relaxing evening I had planned on, but it could have been a whole lot worse! I'm feeling very fortunate tonight, thanks in large part to the Madison Fire Department.

Good to hear you and your family are safe with minimal damage.. I remember the fire in my apartment a few years ago and it was quite an awkward time for me. Happy they arranged for a place for you to stay

Thank god everyone is OK. Our house burnt to the ground when I was a kid. We lost everything we had. I still miss all my trophies and ribbons.

Actually, we were able to stay in our apartment. Once the fire inspector was done, he let us back in. There's no damage to our unit, except one light fixture that filled up with water. The damage upstairs isn't as bad as I had feared. The kitchen sustained serious fire damage, and there's a lot of smoke damage to the rest of the unit, but there doesn't appear to be any major structural damage. We went up and checked today, and the computers, photo albums, etc. all seem to be salvageable.

Im glad to hear everyone is OK...possesions can be replaced but life cannot...On a softer note, I would have tried to light one off of the flames!

That's one of my worst fears. When we were outside watching the Fire Department do their job, I was mentally cataloging all of the mementos and keepsakes that we wouldn't be able to replace. We've got renter's insurance, so financially we would have been fine, but there are so many irreplaceable little things I was afraid we'd lose.

Of course, it wasn't until I was getting ready for bed that I really realized how much worse it could have been. I basically took it for granted that we all got out safely. I'm very thankful for the outcome.

The generosity of my neighbors was also very inspiring. One of my students (I'm a grad student/math instructor at the UW) lives across the street, and she came running over barefoot to make sure we were okay, and then returned with cold drinks and offered us a place to stay. A neighbor we'd never met offered a spare bedroom to my friends from the upstairs unit. The Red Cross was on the scene within the hour to make sure that everyone had a place to stay. And of course the Fire Department: anybody that runs into a burning building to save someone else's life or property is a hero, no doubt.
