Dubai, although located on the Arabian peninsula, does not have a large oil supply. The King or whatever he is called has seen that the economy will be shot so he has allowed for much building with no taxes like Hong Kong or Singapore. Because of this, many of the world's businesses are setting up shop in the city state. Tourism is large here as well because of the fact that it is warm, cheap, and in hotels alcohol is allowed. But a neat video anyways.

Yes, Dubai only has around 4 Billion Barrels of oil left!!! It will still be many many years down the road, but I think they have great foresight to think this far ahead. It is also worth mentioning that Dubai is one "emirate" of 7 I believe that makes up the United Arab Emirates. The UAE is one of the largest holder of reserves in the world with most of it in neighboring Abu Dhabi.

This will probably be the "world's" vacation destination in the near future if it isn't already.

Great Video, Thanks!

You know what pisses me off, Tiger Woods got to hit golf balls off the helicopter landing pad on top of the Burj al_Arab hotel in Dubai.

Don't upset me one bit. I think it is pretty cool. Though the last part of the video was "slightly" bias. Remember oild is traded on a world market and if someone is willing to pay for it at $130+ a barrel, then who am I to be pissed?

exactly, that videos make is clearly uninformed, and its not the people of dubai that are living on the luxury islands and hotels.

I live in an oil exporting country as well, the development here hasn't been quite so extreme, but there is alot of it. A couple comments about the oil prices, they are heavily taxed in europe and heavily subsidized in many other countries, so the number is essentially meaningless.

It doesn't piss me off though, any more than Vegas does.

It doesn't piss me off, it makes me want to go over there and have fun!

No you don't.

I lived in the Middle East for years, although many years back. Arab women off limits, Euro or American women very hard to find, and you’re competing with millionaires for their attention. Most are airline stewardesses, and many take these routs to hook on the side for thousands a night, the gulf air girls especially.

Not much in the way of bars, mostly hotels with lounges, and if you're in a country that isn't dry, they even sell liquor at ridiculous prices. Dance floor, yep, although some don't allow men and women to dance together, so you can dance with guys.

Go to Asia or Europe for your buck.

Definitley looks to be becoming the world's playground. I got a buddy who works for a world market tobacco firm and he lived in dubai for several years. said it was crazy. his housing budget was 15k a month...rediculous!

Rediculous that tobacco (cigarette tobacco) can afford to pay a marketing and research rep to live like that. Rediculous that 15K amonth only gets you like 3000sq ft. 15k here in my town and my house would be like 30,000 sq ft. which is like 2/3 of an acre of floor plan.

You can put a significant amount of blame on US industry + lobbyists over the past 65 years. After WW2, it was the tire industry who killed most mass transit in Calif. Over the past 40 years it's been the auto industry + big oil that has keep the US sucking at the teet of middle east billionaires - instead of developing alternatives. IMO, if not for the Japanese, most everyone in the US might be driving SUVs, pickups and town cars - all with V8s.

To me this isn't just about Dubai, but I thought that video was a god example. It's about all the jackasses that are out to make another couple million on top of their millions/billions. Obviously those oil producers don't really decide the price but they have a hand in it. The companies keep reporting record profits but they're not price gouging.

Well, in my experience any one who can pass on the tax without any repercussions will do so and they do. In the case of oil its taxed extremely heavily.. so unless those taxes are repealed or absorbed by the companies we keep paying through the nose.
