I am looking at the Kimber Ultra Raptor 45, Walther p99, SIG P226, H&K P30, Springfield Armory XD and a few others

I am also unsure of what caliber to get, i want to get something that wont kill my roommates if it goes through the wall but at the same time i want to be able to shoot someone and be confident they are not getting up. That is why i love my shotty because i know that as soon as they hear the "click-click" i wont shouldn't have to worry.

I have the Sig P229. LOVE it!!! I have it in a 9 mm as my wrists are not as strong as I could wish do to a connective tissue disorder I was given to me by my mom. I wanted something I knew I could put a few shots out without getting to shaky. If I could i would get a 40 cal.

I also own a Ithaca shot gun. I recently read an article that stated that fine bird shot is just as effective at hallway range.

The best advice I was given when looking to purchase a handgun was "try it." Here in the peoples republic of NJ you have to know what gun you are going to buy rather quickly after the permit is issued.
I tried the glock, the xd and the sig before I purchased. I had also handled a kimber before I purchased my sig.

I love my Sig 229. I have both the 9 mm and 40 cal barrels. Both are good rounds, but the 9mm is noticably easier to shoot. I would like to get the .357 barrel, because that is supposed to be an awesome round, with plenty of stopping power, even though it is substantially smaller than a normal .357 round.

I am a Browning man with a two 12's and a 20. I have one Winchester that I picked up at an auction late last year. I will have to check the model.

Couple thoughts here.

First is that a 9mm out of a short rifle or a .223 with proper ammo will not overpenetrate more than a 12ga. with buck shot. Those misconseptions were dispelled during the 90's but still pop up. Most SRT's use .223, or 9mm +P+ primarily with one 12ga, mostly as a door lock buster.

Any of the above options beats a handgun for self defense, stops for a .223 is around 97% way better than even a .357 which is one of the best. Also longer guns are easier to point and shoot acurately under stress, fire rapidly and retain without getting shot with it, if you use a good sling.

Short shotguns almost always have short magazine tubes, main downside that caused SRT's to move from SG's on to SMG's and AR's is increased capacity. I can't imagine being happy about a four or five shot weapon. A very kick butt seargent once told me, you can forget most of thee kit, but pack all the socks and ammo you can carry on the run.

If you are buying a handgun buy what you shoot accurately, noting else matters.

My wife is the best shot with a Sig 239 I dragged home to refinish and resell. It's hers now, I don't shoot it well. I like the Glocks, a custom compact 45 officers I built and a Para Limited, she hates them all. We both shoot a S&W 66 I have very well, and neither shoot a S&W 432 she bought well at all.

At the end of the day a cartridge will destroy a few ounces of flesh, which few ounces far outways, gun brands or cartridge balistics.

[Thread Jack for mnelson]

I'm with Bama, I love my Taurus compact 40 but I've got the 24/7 compact not the millenium.

I still think "The Judge" made by Taurus would be a great home protection handgun. It's a revolver that will chamber a 410 shell and a 45 long colt. It's not a CCW but the video on their website is very impressive. With the 410 rounds you wouldn't have to worry "as much" about whats on the other side of the wall.

You've listed some very nice models and I don't think you would be disappointed with any of them. But, if you are really unsure about the caliber and you don't have a place to rent them I think you should look at the new Sig P250 "The P250, a modular pistol that allows the shooter to change caliber and size at will.... The SIG SAUER P250 was designed specifically to address the future needs of the military, law enforcement, and civilian shooters around the world. ...The P250's innovative design enables the shooter to quickly remove the functional mechanism and place it into the polymer grip of his choice. This allows an immediate change in caliber and size;(subcompact, compact and full). " I think this may be my next purchase.

[Sorry for the thread jack, you may now return to the regular thread]

.410 is not a self defense load.

I second that, the .410 pistols are gymics. If they are smooth bore they shoot the 45LC with the accuracy of a spit wad. If they have rifeling the shot pattern out of the .410 looks like a donut. Factory .410 is also loaded with slow burning powder for longer barels, so performance is weak compaired to the balistic charts you will find for a long gun. Oh yea, and if you make a cylinder that will hold a shell that long, it is very forward heavy in balance.
