This year I smoked a cigar ever 2-3 weeks or so, but in the last month I've been burning about a stick a day as I try out new things to figure out what I like.

In the last week or so, I've noticed that every cigar is starting to taste the same to me. I pretty much just get this one strong flavor in every stick (not sure what to call that flavor). This includes cigars that I had previously had and tasted MUCH different.

Rocky Patel Olde World Reserve Corojo
Rocky Patel Vintage 1990
5 Vegas Classic
Romeo y Julietta Reserve Maduro
CAO VR
Rocky Patel Signature (twice)
Rocky Patel Olde World Reserve Maduro
5 Vegas Gold

Now, these are very different cigars that should taste totally different--and HAVE to me in the past! These cigars are stored in 2 different tupperdors and have all been received in the last 6 weeks, mostly from CI and CBid.

This has me somewhat concerned. Has my mouth simply been overloaded with more tobacco than it's used to? Should I take a break for a week? Is there something I'm missing here?

Thanks for your help!!

Might be a little residual flavor from yesterday. Also you might want to slow down when you smoke. If you get a cigar too hot it might flatten the flavor out to where it just becomes the same as the last one. You might also try to drink just ice water when smoking to clean your pallet. best advice I ever took was to SLOW DOWN.

First off it sounds like your tastes might be evolving and you need to smoke something a little different... Try a SG wrapper or a Cammy wrapper(AF hemingway or Don Carlos)... But it also could be that you have burnt out your tastebuds and that'll take a good week maybe longer or you could even have a sinus infection.

I tend to smoke pretty slowly, actually, because my mouth is sensitive to the hot smoke. I almost always drink water while I smoke.

If I had to guess it would be that my mouth was just overloaded/burnt out a bit from the drastic jump in my smoking frequency, but I really don't know.

I'll plan to take a break for a week or so and see how it goes. When I "recover" I'll probably go down to every other day or so, I was just so excited to find so many cigars that I liked, that I went a bit overboard maybe.

Any other thoughts?

I think when he said slow down he meant fewer smokes. If you are experiencing sensory overload, unlaod the senses.

Thanks. I'll try that--I'm instituting a "No Smoking" policy effective immediately. :eyequiver

I'll post and update once I've tried that.

lol, nice. Well, at first I actually thought it was the cigars...after 2 of them. But after 6 or 7...I seriously doubt it.

It's me. Something is wrong with me :crying:

Hopefully it's just smoke overload and I can recover soon. My mouth isn't BURNT though, or anything, because food tastes fine. It's just the smoke.

And also, it seemed to me that the first 1/2 inch to 1 inch of my RP Signature today did taste "right," and then it started tasting like everything else. I'm not sure if that lends credence to the burnout theory or not.

I've never smoked more than one or 2 cigars a day -- but some of those who have say it's more enjoyable in moderation. I'd guess probably healthier too.

GREAT idea. I find that every year or so I take a break. I've been through a number of flat periods like this and find that you either need to smoke an AMAZING cigar or take a number of weeks off. The amazing cigars have been not just a normal cigar that tastes good, I'm talking aged, rare, special stuff. THings with flavors you'll not get anywhere else.
If you don't want to burn a cigar like this, the time off is your best bet.

I'll tell ya this... Food and drink will taste normal it's smoke and booze that doesn't taste the same when you've burnt your phuggin tongue from smoking to much.

I agree here. Even though food and drink might leave an aftertaste, they don't impair yer senses, and the perception for those are not easily impaired (unless ye smoke a blood load of cigars, that is). Be sure to keep a balance in flavors (just like when making a recipe) and therefore lettting al flavors compliment each other, as opposite to overwhelming each other.

Or you could buy some fresh Thompson house brands and really taste bad cigars.

Na I still wouldn't go that far.

Thanks for that. Since I've never experienced this before, I was bit uneasy. Knowing that this is fairly not uncommon makes me feel a lot better.

Would you suggest a week? Longer? Like I said, I'm not burnt, just "overloaded" or whatever.

Thanks for helping the noob out, everybody!

It sounds like you smoked too many too fast. Certain cigars (like the Illusione 68) have a "finish" that lasts for hours, if not days.

One thing that I very much suggest is finding a palate-cleanser that you enjoy. I personally find that limes work best for me. I will keep a lime in my water when I smoke a cigar. The intensity of the citrus on the palate is effective to basically reset your mind's perception of the cigar. I use limes over oranges for the reduction of the sugar content and over lemons because I just don't like the sour taste in my mouth while smoking.

The same concept holds true with smells, also. If you ever go into a perfume shop and begin to feel the light-headed / brain-freeze feeling, grab for the tin of coffee that they are 99% guaranteed to have. The intensity of the smell of coffee neutralizes the overload of the perfumes on your senses.

Cool.

Hope it helps.

2-3 weeks was usually what I did. Cigars didn't taste NEW after that but they did have individuality. Maybe try that timeframe & just go a week or two longer if the first test cigar still is less than expected. Longest I've gone on one of these self induced dry spells was about a month. Right as rain afterwards.

Wow, you're a fount of information! I have noticed that some cigars do leave an aftertaste than can last days, but I guess I never thought that this might then effect the taste of other cigars I smoked after that.

Thinking back, I smoked the RP Vintage '90 and the following day the CAO VR. AFTER THAT, the following cigars seemed to all have the same flavor--the flavor that was most pronounced in the VR. The VR itself sort of overpowered me while I was smoking it. So maybe that "finish" lingered into following days, and all the accumulation finally just overloaded me.

Thanks for the lime tip too. That sounds smart. What other pallet cleaners are there besides citrus?

I know that mouthwash will work for me after a cigar, but honestly I don't like the aftertaste of mouthwash either. Finding a better way to cleanse my pallet would be nice.

I like lemon more than Lime. Lime tends to have "bitters" that last a bit too long. Lemon is a bit cleaner.
