The best movie I've seen in years. It's much more a psychological drama than a traditional western. Though there are a few scenes of violence, it's a rather slowly paced movie.
After a less than satisfactory train robbery, Frank James essentially retires and the James Gang disperses. Some of them get arrested and Jesse James becomes progressively more paranoid. He ends up with only two men he thinks he may be able to trust, but they have a secret that would surely result in their deaths should Jesse find out.
The cinematography is superb with a lot of wide shots of desolate and snowy landscapes. Brad Pitt as Jesse James is perhaps the least compelling actor among an excellent cast, most of whom I've never seen before. Casey Affleck portrays Bob Ford. He is the very definition of a sycophant and someone for whom you'll alternately feel great empathy and disgust.
Ridley Scott produced. Nick Cave wrote the soundtrack and also had a small role in the movie.
Three thumbs up!
