Here are the lyrics to one of my favorite johnny Cash Songs. I think this tells it all.

"Ragged Old Flag"

I walked through a county courthouse square
On a park bench, an old man was sittin' there.
I said, "Your old court house is kinda run down,
He said, "Naw, it'll do for our little town".
I said, "Your old flag pole is leaned a little bit,
And that's a ragged old flag you got hangin' on it".
He said, "Have a seat", and I sat down,
"Is this the first time you've been to our little town"
I said, "I think it is"
He said "I don't like to brag, but we're kinda proud of
That Ragged Old Flag

"You see, we got a little hole in that flag there,
When Washington took it across the Delaware.
and It got powder burned the night Francis Scott Key sat watching it,
writing "Say Can You See"
It got a rip in New Orleans, with Packingham & Jackson
tugging at its seams.
and It almost fell at the Alamo
beside the Texas flag,
But she waved on though.
She got cut with a sword at Chancellorsville,
And she got cut again at Shiloh Hill.
There was Robert E. Lee and Beauregard and Bragg,
And the south wind blew hard on
That Ragged Old Flag

"On Flanders Field in World War I,
She got a big hole from a Bertha Gun,
She turned blood red in World War II
She hung limp, and low, a time or two,
She was in Korea, Vietnam, She went where she was sent
by her Uncle Sam.
She waved from our ships upon the briny foam
and now they've about quit wavin' back here at home
in her own good land here She's been abused,
She's been burned, dishonored, denied an' refused,
And the government for which she stands
Has been scandalized throughout out the land.
And she's getting thread bare, and she's wearin' thin,
But she's in good shape, for the shape she's in.
Cause she's been through the fire before
and i believe she can take a whole lot more.

"So we raise her up every morning
And we bring her down slow every night,
We don't let her touch the ground,
And we fold her up right.
On second thought
I *do* like to brag
Cause I'm mighty proud of
That Ragged Old Flag"

That sucks, and he sucks, he is entitled to his oppinion, but he is also a profesional teaching at a school. He may have feelings about lots of issues like right to life, Jesus, immigration, etc. BUT, he is not suposed to be teaching more than the cariculum. If you want to do something about it write it up and send it as a formal letter to the school board. It's first weeks of school, demand now for a change of class or teacher now so it's hard for retaliation. That is bull shit! These issues in the hands of the media get teachers and school board members fired!

I agree that the gentleman has the right to his beliefs but...as a teacher...I would be highly surprised if he was not breaking school policy by taking it down.

My first instinct, as others have said, was that he was trying to foster debate within the class. Has anyone raised their hand and respectfully questioned why he removed it when all the other classes you have ever attended kept it displayed/hung throughout the day? Perhaps he is waiting for that one student to start the discussion. If he starts giving you his reasons, don't back down on yours in regards to why it shouldn't be removed. The key is to carry on a respectful and calm exchange.

You have 3 choices:
1. Say nothing and live with it.
2. Question it in a respectful manner and you are that one student he was waiting for to do it...in turn making you a star!
3. Question it in a respectful manner and you are that one student who has proven to be an outspoken dipshit in his mind making you a loser to keep his eye on.

Only you can decide which option is best. At 18 years of age, I would have picked option 1, which is the safest route. At 40 years of age, I would be all over option 2.

At 18, I would have certainly said something. At 34...I would have let it go. But, I guess that is the different lessons we all learn. I have to pick my battles wisely...because my mouth has gotten me into alot of ish over the years.

True about different lessons learned. I would have looked at it as I was 18 and still learning about life and would have kept my mouth shut. At 40, I have enough knowledge and beliefs to defend my principles.

My first semester of college I had a History of Religion professor that upon the "bell" opening the class, spit on a bible and threw it against the back wall. No joke. People went crazy and left the class screaming & cussing him out. For those of us who were left, he explained that anyone who goes into an academic class with a preconcieved notion of what is to be expected IS NOT GOING INTO IT ACADEMICALLY.

Now, I was a total puss in school. Didn't want to get expelled or suspended so it was a very rare occasion that I would act up. My SOP was to go to to the SUPERIORS and handle it that way.

In the sake of Doctor McTighe (the bible guy), I was glad I didn't walk out. His explaination of beliefs over judgement was amazing. Stating that he was too a Christian but needed the people, who wouldn't commit themselves to learning about other religions to cement their own beliefs in Christ, to leave.

Your guy may be doing the very same thing. Trashing the flag to support what it stands for. It's a great way to get people's attention, you've got to admit. Give the guy some time & if things don't improve & he's teaching a class with a CLOSED MIND, his superiors will do something, trust me. If his superiors dont, go to local politicians. If the politicians dont, go to local media. If the local media won't, go to the public & start a grass roots program. You've certainly got the support here.

At 43 years old, I look back to the things I have learned about patriotism, weather I'm 18, 34, or 104, I believe that it a true disgrace what your teacher has done. I believe he has the rights to speak his views, that part of the symbolism that our flag gives us. he should show the respect for the flag that gives him that right to speak up and oppose the views of our government. Old Glory is the proud banner of our nation that gives us those rights. In most other counties in the world, such disrespect would not be tolerated. Too many people have died for our freedom. I don't always agree with the politics of our government, but that is the beauty that is built into our constitution (of course this also can be debated with the recent executive orders that have put in place the last several years, I will save this for another thread in the debate room).

GOD BLESS AMERICA!!

I have to think he's stirring the pot to make some point.... He may even not hate america...... Then again, I could be wrong. Sit, watch, learn, then react. Don't jump to any conclusions just yet. He sounds like a real liberal, artsy kind of guy.
These are things you learn as you get older and more mature. Look Aaron, you're in a learning situation here and this guy, most likely I'll say, is trying to provoke thought. As was said earlier, I'll bet there's a method here that will reveal itself with time. Some of my favorite professors in collage were those who stirred the pot and created discussion. Hang in there Man, he's already achieved his first goal. He's got your attention. :hammersma

Most institutes of higher learning have VERY liberal profs. I think many say things to provoke debate. But, there are also many just on a hippie power kick. The difficult thing is to know what you are dealing with. If the classes have very subjective grading...you must be careful with correcting a prof on a rant. There are some professions where you have no chance of getting into post grad school if you fail a course. So, the question is it worth it?

...Quitely, calmly, stand up, walk over and pick up the flag (and if you are so inclined, put it back where it belongs)...politely inform your teacher that, "A great number of honorable people have died over the years to give you the right to dishonor this flag. Thankfully, they also fought and died for my right to defend it."

Walk back to your desk and sit down.

And keep in mind that you are in a speech and debate class.
Perfect.

amgracing, I replied after the reading only the first page, I didn't realize there were two more :sarcastic Anyway, I would take into consideration what DocLogic77 last posted. If nothing else, I might schedule a meeting with a faculty member you trust and explain the situation, just to cover your ass. This guy sounds like an activist who might like nothing more than to "legislate" from the desk.
