Turned out badly I guess. I'll stand corrected. I would do a little reporting and I wouldn't go to the school board either. You see, I'll give anybody the benefit of the doubt but don't fuck me over. I don't usually get mad....I usually get even.

The flag is only a symbol. A very important principle of our country is that we are all entitled to our opinions and are free to express them however we see fit regardless of how distasteful others may find them.

Every few years, some senator will introduce a bill intended to ban flag desecration. This is false patriotism. If you really love our country, you'll defend the principles it was founded upon, not a little made-in-China piece of cloth.

"I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."

Many people in this country have fought and died and that symbol stands for those people. it has nothing to do with it being "just a piece of cloth" it is what that piece of cloth stands for and represents. that is wht we should respect it and not throw it on the ground..i do agree with the last quote!

As has been said. Quitely, calmly, stand up, walk over and pick up the flag (and if you are so inclined, put it back where it belongs). Beyond that it's up to you though I would politely inform your teacher that, "A great number of honorable people have died over the years to give you the right to dishonor this flag. Thankfully, they also fought and died for my right to defend it."

Walk back to your desk and sit down.

And keep in mind that you are in a speech and debate class. I'd be very surprised if this guy didn't do all of this just to get a rise out of folks and to illustrate something as it relates to debates (keeping ones cool, for instance). Good luck with your class.
Well said and well thought out, brother. That is the best suggestion I've read where it puts you in a win win situation. You get to show others how you feel and it puts the onus on the professor. Personally, if I were in that class and someone showed that kind of guts I'd give them a standing ovation right then and there. Don't take the bait to do something physical, overpower them with your mind.

Wait an f-ing minute. Where does a high school teacher get off with getting away with that. They are not professors at university, they are employees of the school district. Therefore they are bound by state and local laws, which I am willing to bet would not be favorable to such actions.
If he did this as a way to foster debate, maybe I could see his reasoning, but for ANY OTHER reason, this issue should be taken up the school chain of command.
You certainly have the right to confront his actions, but in high school teachers are apt to be more of a bully that anything else. The local papers would love to know of such actions in a frickin' high school.

Just my .02, handle it as you want.

I totally agree. The flag should be respected. But, the actual freedom is more important that the symbol of that freedom. He has the freedom to disrespect what many of us hold close to our heart. That flag not only symbolizes your freedom but his...and respecting his freedom is the best way to respect the flag. Just my 2 cents.
