Kurt has a point. I like the "bitters" better than the "sours". I find the limes cleaner, tho. To each his own! (and I like to eat lemons fresh off the tree just like an orange)

To a degree, sipping black coffee will cleanse the palate. Otherwise, I found this:

-----

-A glass of icy sparkling water may often be appropriate.
-A light citrus flavored aperitif can do the trick. Keep the drink minimally sweet.
- Lotus or other herb teas are sometimes served between courses to soothe the tongue and slow the pace of the meal.
-A plain salad made up of ingredients like celery, parsley, mint, with a mild vinaigrette
will do the trick.
-To address your question Brian, plain herbs like parsley, marjoram, mint, or watercress
will perform admirably as flavor neutralizers.

-----

Now, I would shy away from needing a salad for every cigar or chewing on any kind of mint (ever) when smoking. However, you may want to try sparkling water or a light lemon sorbet. Some strong liquor perhaps. I like to drink scotch or conjac. One thing that you should keep in the back of your mind is that anything that you do eat or drink will cause your cigar to taste different. You will taste more creaminess in any cigar if you suck on a Werther's Original before you smoke. It's actually really fun to play with if you get bored with a go-to cigar. I'll have a scotch with a cigar one night and then a shiraz with the same cigar the next just to see how different I perceive it.

I've known some cigars to finish pretty long, but I can usually get by with one cigar every afternoon. Those that I normally smoke may linger overnight until I brush my teeth again in the morning, but some just simply stick with you. I won't smoke the 68 anymore for that fact.

As and interesting side note, I freaked out a little when I got the teeny little bowl of lemon sorbet at a restaurant here in Vegas. I never realized that each course is intended to be eaten with a fresh, clean palate, (which the waiter so eloquently explained.) It was pretty cool. (...The bill was not.....)

PS- Let me reiterate- NEVER chew on mint when smoking; do not brush your teeth before. I've done it- NOT FUN, lol. :wtf:

All of the rockies you mentioned taste a little leathery to me. I would suggest trying some smoother/creamier blends. You ever tried a Cuvee Blanc, Por Larranaga, Butera, Chateau Real, Perdomo Lot 23 or Fonseca? I smoked rockys and 5 vegas for a while until I found those. I like to go bake and forth from that type to stronger stuff (gurkhas, gran habanos, partagas black label, Monte Cristo Serie C and notice the differences. I like the Don Pepin Garcia Cuban Classic and Vista De Cuba (on a lesser level) because they seems to marry the two styles. Just my two cents.

I've been smoking one or two cigars every day for over a year and I've definitely noticed a general dullness to their flavor. The old go-to sticks just aren't the same anymore. I think I'm up for a break too. We could do this like the Seinfeld Masturbation Contest. Who's in?

I sorry. All this is just cracking me up. Smoke different ciagrs, smoke stronger cigars, smoke fewer cigars or stop for a while. Cigars are an enjoyment not a chore. If you are not enjoying them...stop.

UPDATE:

So, I smoked one the other day. I went with something real mild (Java Latte). It tasted normal (good) until about the last 2 inches or so, when it started to taste like "tar" (which is what I'm calling that taste that was somehow stuck in my pallet). It could have been the cigar, or it could be that I"m not quite back to normal yet.

I'm going to wait another week before smoking another, and see how it goes then. I am encouraged, however, at least I could taste a cigar again!!

Thanks for all your suggestions!

Try the Gran Habano Corojo #5. Good and complex, fits the flavor profiles you seem to enjoy. Smoke it VERY slowly. The burn will be perfect, so don't worry about leaving it sit for 2+ minutes before taking another puff.

I wish that would happen to me...if they all taste like an Opus Fuente Fuente, I'd be OK with that!

lol, yea sure. Instead, they all taste like smokey tar. Not so nice. Laying off for a week is quite a bit harder than I thought, actually, especially with all the new stuff I've bought recently.

But I've been compensating for not being able to smoke cigars by buying more cigars...oh crap, now I'm out of room.

I actually just won one of those in a sampler. I'll check it out soon, thanks :)
