My desktop crashed the other day. I've had a nasty trojan for a long time and couldn't get rid of it, well i got another one the other day and it crashed my computer. All it does now is loops the startup. It will get to the XP startup screen then it goes back to powerdown and starts back up.

Any help on fixing it? I don't have SP2 to restore or fix windows, so a little help would be appreciated.

This happened to mine as well.

One of the technicians at work just wiped the entire hard drive, then reinstalled everything. I didn't have anything that I needed to recover, so this was the best option.

However, if there are files you need to recover, I'm not sure what you can do.

I have an enclosure that I am going to hook up to the drive and see if I can peel off everything I want to save before I wipe it. I backed up all my pix like 6 months ago, so I won't loose too many off of this drive, but it's still a PITA!

Still looking for some help with the SP2 though...:computer:

I am assuming you already held f8 and tried to boot up in safe mode, or with last known good configuration. If not try that, if so, enable boot logging boot, and see if you can make it to a command prompt.

I don't know if it will work but try starting it up in "safe mode". You may still be able to get the files you need. As your computer is booting up hold F8 function key down (if it gives a stuck key message try pressing it continuously), this will give you access to the Windows Advanced Options Menu and allow you to start your computer in "safe mode".

I am not a computer technician so I'm not positive that you can retrieve your files in this mode but it may be worth a try.

If you get to "SAFE MODE" you can down load a program called "SpyWare Doctor". That along with Piriform CCleaner got rid of the one on mine. You may also need "Perfect Uninstaller" to uninstall the thing if your regular "uninstall" program doesn't do it.

I'll try that. I know I can get to the prompt for safemode, but when I tried to do last good session, it went into the loop.

Problem with sweeping is the spyware or virus has either written to your register or corupted your .exe files. Is there any chance it's a dell? If it's a dell you can restore factory settings by keying ctrl-F11 during boot. You'll lose your data but it's alot easier then the reformat. I would also go back in safe mode and try to restore your file settings to an earlier date. I got one a couple of weeks ago and it tore mine up. Had to reset to whole laptop to factory. Good luck, I know what a bitch it is.

It's an older HP310n. It's been upgraded several times but still has it's original processor. I've tried everything but can't break the loop. I'll just grab what I can from the drives and wipe 'em this weekend.

It just sucks...I keep the kids and the Mrs. off my computer because the last time this happened it was from the kids d/l crap and the Mrs. on myspace. There is a ton of embedded crapola on those sites. I have been running without various window features for about a year (no restore, got ate up) but the one that really ticked me off was the one that turned off the task manager (locked out by admin command).

I'm about to say screw PC's altogether and get a mac.

Sorry your computer isn't working well. Put your condoms in the trash and they won't gum up the keyboard. :)

Sorry, Rob, I couldn't help it.
