This is the scenario...... Your smoking a cigar and when you get to the middle of it your having trouble keeping it burning. This really wouldn't bother me so much if the cigar didn't have such a nasty taste from trying to relight it.

Right now my cigar oasis says the RH is at 68 while my hygrometer says
68f - 70rh

Everybody says cigars like 70% right?
Should I lower the humidity?

thanks

I have been working towards the 65% RH. Everything I have been told, read, and experienced make them perfect in every way. Also, what I have gathered is that 65% is the prefered "aging" level.

I store at 65%. Some people like 60 some like 70 so I thought right in the middle was good right? I don't know that 70% would cause your sticks to do that but I am not an expert by any means.

how long have you had these sticks in your humi? Is it more then one stick, and is it more then one size and brand? I have mine at 67-68 Rh and its fine. I dont smoke anything unless its rested for a month. Also how often are you drawing on the cigar most will go out after a couple of mins without drawing. (I know the last is obvious but i still ask)
Just tryin to help. P.s. if you are over humidified I think you would have more issues like the foot swelling and wrapper splitting.
You can always lower your Rh a few points and gradually get to the right #. It also gives you a reason to smoke more for scientific reasons.

I just transfered all my stick to a 28 bottle vinotemp wine cooler about two months ago. I have all kinds of stick and about 80 right now.
Usually I leave mine rested about a month.
I know people say to draw every minute , but sometimes I tend to draw a little less.

I think I'm going to lower the humidity setting on my cigar oasis to 66 and see what happens.

If you are smoking really slowly with a long ash it could definitely be cooling your cherry down to the point that it is going out. I would try puffing and ashing more frequently and see what happens before changing rh.

I think you will find that most cigars smoke better in the 67 range anyway. Give us some more details:
- does this happen with multiple brands and vitolas
- where are you smoking, si there wind or other elements that could affect the burn
- how often are you puffing on average
- Has it always been like this or did it just start

I am not necessarily going in one particular direction with this but the more info the better... someone will know the answer.
-It happens with multiple brands
-I usually smoke in a vehicle with the window cracked
-If I were to time my puffs, which I have never really done I would say they are probably about, in the range, some where, close, in proximity to 45 seconds.

- It has happened every once and a while, but the last couple of months I have noticed it happening more often.

Try a few of the older sticks in your selection, ones that you know are aged well more then a month. If it happens to them then I think you may have an issue. From what I seen you shouldn't have a problem with Rh yet.

The act of gently blowing smoke back through your cigar to reduce the effects of stale smoke or tar build up.

If I was to guess, I would focus on the environment in which you are smoking the cigar. As you put it "in the car with the window down" I assume while driving. Wind does all kind of werid things to a cigar. It can cause and odd burn, unravelled wrapper etc. Yopu may not know how long it really is between puffs. Next when smoking in a cigar I have a tendency to ash too often sometimes creating a tunnel, unburned wrapper, with recessed tobacco. Another problem is ashing and losing all or some of the burning ember due to the wind suction out the window.

All I can say is when a cigar goes wrong on me it is rarely my humidor and usually the environment where I am smoking.

You can keep your cigars at whatever humidity point you want, but the combustion won't happen if the tobacco is too wet.

Lower the Oasis and it will take care of the problem. If you don't want to or can't, you can Dry Box, but that has another set of issues if your cigars are too wet. If the wrapper is too dry and the filler is too wet, you'll burst the wrapper.

Just drop your humidity down to 65% or a point or two under, It will correct some of your issues.

Right on guys.
I'm going to try smoking in different environments and see if that helps. I usually have the window down just a bit though.
I usually don't try to keep a long ash on my stick nor try to ash too often too. Usually I leave like about an inch of ash then get rid of it.

Mean while I'm going to drop the humidity a bit which will take some time for the stick to acclimate anyways.

Thanks for the tips, you guys are great.:applause:

A little update as of today.
So what I did as of my last post I turned off my cigar oasis and let the sticks sit of a bit with no help. My hygrometer says 67% percent now. So I set my cigar oasis to 66% as of this morning. I know it was only been less than a week, which probably didn't do much, but I had to smoke a cigar to finish off a good week for me today.
Whilst smoking a cigar in my car, where I have had problems before I took puffs a little more frequent and maintained less ash on the end. When it got to the usual spot where it doesn't like staying lit it only need me to perform CPR once for a short amount of time too. After that it was smooth sailing. So, I figure it was probably a little of everything that was giving me the issues.
The cigar that I smoked today still seemed a little too spongy in the middle, but I still had to smoke it.
Came home today after work and its holding 67%, so I'm going to stick with this for a bit.

Right on! I'm really glad that you were able to get somethings under better control. I really like the more robust flavor I get from my cigars when they are in the 60-65% range too. Maybe you'll have the same experience.

Good luck with the progress!

I gotta agree with the rest of the guys 65% is about as good as you can get IMO. Even though you wouldnt think @68 you would be having problems keeping them lit. The purge is a good idea also.
