I think you might be right, *but* the Altadis pamphlet says you'll go to jail if you own authentic Cuban cigars, because they're still a counterfeit. So the average dude might be too scared to buy real ones.
Who knows. It's retarded either way.

deffinetly retarded and a wierd way to go about it. the lose alot of credit with educated smokers. But if the average guy doesn't want o buy real Cubans...GOOD. More for the guy who does.

I think the "beacuse they are still counterfeit" is legally true. because we don't recognize those brands or companies from Cuba. so legally they are counterfeit Montes, but an educated man would know the difference.

Is Altadis prosecuting people in other countries for selling/owning/smoking Habano Monte's? Or are they only going after sellers in the States?

I don't know - Just speculating.

The info seems to be pretty clear:
1- Cuban cigars are illegal
2- Cuban counterfiets are frequently sold to uneducated consumers
3- Here's the difference....

(The 'counterfiet claim' definitely gives them the legal avenue to prosecute counterfieters in the U.S., whereas if they prosecuted in a foriegn country, they would definitely be stepping on their own toes by discouraging purchases made from a company they own 50% of...)

No, just in the US. Everywhere else, people realize that Altadis' products are crap and they smoke Habanos. Altadis only has jurisdiction on this lame topic in the United States. Shit, Altadis might even get in trouble for selling domestic Montecristos elsewhere in the world, because that's Cuba's territory.

this may ahve been said already, but this appears to be a case of extremely poor marketing. Whoever their director of sales adn marketing is should be fired!

The way i interpret this is that if it's not an Altidas monecristo, then it's a fake MC, and even if it's an MC made in cuba, it's a fake MC as it did not come from Altidas. Thye're saying that the Altidas MC is the sh!t and all others are copying fakes if it says monte cristo. How arrogant!

Oh, and like we all know, they suck!

I've enjoyed the domestic Montecristo Whites I've smoked, but then I guess I have bad taste.

I don't smoke Cubans and side with the domestic brands for a lot of the reasons Mitch mentioned. The Cubans might be better now, but it's pretty shitty who's controlling the purse strings.

If he was selling fake Cubans I could understand that, but I assumed they were real as I have never seen a fake Trinidad before. It just doesn't seem like it would be worth the time to counterfeit a smaller brand like them.

Recently there was a blurp about a ring of couterfiters selling swishers. They found out because somebody sent some cigars to sweet swisher complaining about the quality. How bad does a cigar have to be to offend a swisher smoker?????
