I'm sure at least a few of yall have seen or heard of converting a old surplus ammo can into a rough and tough not to mention cool lookin' humidor.I just need a humidor that I can take with me fishin' or campin' that can take a beatin'. I was wondering if anyone had some advice or some instructions. One thing I am worried about is that gun oil smell that's still in the can. Is there any way to get rid of the smell? I would appreciate any help.

I've never done this, but baking soda usually gets the smell out. As for a humidor that can take a beating: Cigar Caddy/Otterbox, which 3 of our retailers carry.

PS - Go in to the introductions forum and tell us about yerself!

if you got the ammo can already, then just a good cleaning. maybe a power wash of the inside.

if you didnt get the case, then just get a used Pelican or Otterbox off Ebay. That will get you a bomb proof case. You will still need to spend some $ on the inside of the case such as foam trays and humidification. For what retailers are selling ready to go Cigar caddys for, it almost doesnt pay to try to do it yourself.

thanks for the advice. I didn't even think of the baking soda idea, makes sense now. I looked at the cigar caddy and I like it but I already got the can. Plus, I want to see how it turns out cause my cousin is in the Marines and he wants a cool humidor he can take with him on his deployments.

PS - sorry about not posting anything about myself. Im just your basic guy from SC, love to fish, hike, and enjoy some cigars.

I would also think about maybe lining it with cedar. What size are you going to use. I ask because it would become a bitch to try to take cigars out of it especially if it one of the tall ones.

One of my buddies has made a couple of these. He's in Iraq right now or I'd ask him for instructions. I know he's lined them with cedar, but you need to be careful that you use a glue that has no fumes. That can majorly effect you cigars. I'd go ahead and line the whole thing with cedar, too. Maybe tear apart some spare boxes from your B&M and use the wood from them.

Just be sure to check out how to make a coolerdor and do the same thing once the smell is gone.
