Geez Neuro, this is horrible. I'll tell ya, if I was you, I'd use resources like Craigslist to try & sell yourself as a viable candidate for consulting work. I'm sure you've tried this but on the slim chance you haven't, give it a go.Sorry to hear about all of you that have been laid off, but if you think it sucks looking for another job when you're young, try and find one when you're 62...I haven't been able to find a job in several years now...I was in IT and have 20+ years experience and I'd work for what they pay a recent college grad...and I have two degrees, about a half dozen Microsoft and Cisco certifications, and I'm walking around with more computer stuff in my head than anyone I know, and that goes from building machines from scratch, programming in Basic and Cobol (15+ years), and being an network admin/engineer with a MCSE & CCNA (5 years)...but every where I go the look at the gray hair on my head rather than what's inside it...:dunno:
Yeah, i 'm in the market for a cash under the table gig at a cigar shop! Something to help pass the time and get me outta the house for the evening, and oh, have a few smokes!!! I've casually inquired at one place, but i think i'm gonna look a littel harder. I'd be willing to work for free if i could smoke every time i worked, but the 'ol lady probably wouldn't see the point in that.
Let's see, $5 / hr.
4-5 hours = $20
Gas to closest lounge that's 42 minutes away = $8.
OK, maybe i'm gonna have a tough time selling this to the wife regardless.
Glad you were able to find something, especially in SE Michigan.I lost my job of over 5 years and was out of work for 6 months for before i finally found another job. Michigan's economy is horrible and getting worse. My pay is 2/3rds what it was before, but at least i have an income.
good luck guys! hang in there.....
Have you been over to Occidental College? It's right near Glendale and a gorgeous place if you haven't been there yet. They have some grounds, food service, security, and other positions open. Some are "as needed" but until you get something permanent that's better than nothing. Probably not what you thought you'd do at a college but they pay and it's a great place to hang out even if you're not working there.I tried that. I called about 10 shops but nobody is hiring. :crying: I even applied for a job as a swing shift dishwasher today but got stood up for the interview. Times are tough.
Thanks, but been there, done that...Craigslist was a total washout and there isn't much in consulting ins So. Florida...too many of us are unemployed so even that stuff goes to the younger guys...I can remember days when they used to scream for COBOL programmers and network engineers and would take you just as long as you were breathing...sigh...the worst thing about it is that I always had some funds coming in every year from a trust fund but thanks to the stock market crash my only income for 2009 was wiped out...:angerhead...good thing I have Social Security at least or I'd really be screwed but it's gonna be a tight year...Geez Neuro, this is horrible. I'll tell ya, if I was you, I'd use resources like Craigslist to try & sell yourself as a viable candidate for consulting work. I'm sure you've tried this but on the slim chance you haven't, give it a go.
I hear you about the "grey hair" bit. I've heard more than one person in more than one industry say they'd rather hire a young guy with the chance of him becoming management one day than an older, QUALIFIED guy to be management know because he may retire soon, starting the entire process again.
This is great advice. I have closed many deals large and small in cigar shops. I have met and hired people that I have met while talking over a stick. It is an ice breaker, some thing we have in common. I tend to be a listener and I am constantly amazed at the volume of information that passes around in a cigar shop big and small.Sorry to hear about all the brothers...remember to be flexible and keep your options open. Networking is big too....don't just sit at home...get out to the local cigar lounge, you never know who you might sit down next to and start chatting with.
