I tried that. I called about 10 shops but nobody is hiring. :crying: I even applied for a job as a swing shift dishwasher today but got stood up for the interview. Times are tough.

Sorry to hear about all of you that have been laid off, but if you think it sucks looking for another job when you're young, try and find one when you're 62...I haven't been able to find a job in several years now...I was in IT and have 20+ years experience and I'd work for what they pay a recent college grad...and I have two degrees, about a half dozen Microsoft and Cisco certifications, and I'm walking around with more computer stuff in my head than anyone I know, and that goes from building machines from scratch, programming in Basic and Cobol (15+ years), and being an network admin/engineer with a MCSE & CCNA (5 years)...but every where I go the look at the gray hair on my head rather than what's inside it...:dunno:
Geez Neuro, this is horrible. I'll tell ya, if I was you, I'd use resources like Craigslist to try & sell yourself as a viable candidate for consulting work. I'm sure you've tried this but on the slim chance you haven't, give it a go.

I hear you about the "grey hair" bit. I've heard more than one person in more than one industry say they'd rather hire a young guy with the chance of him becoming management one day than an older, QUALIFIED guy to be management know because he may retire soon, starting the entire process again.

Yeah, i 'm in the market for a cash under the table gig at a cigar shop! Something to help pass the time and get me outta the house for the evening, and oh, have a few smokes!!! I've casually inquired at one place, but i think i'm gonna look a littel harder. I'd be willing to work for free if i could smoke every time i worked, but the 'ol lady probably wouldn't see the point in that.

Let's see, $5 / hr.

4-5 hours = $20

Gas to closest lounge that's 42 minutes away = $8.

OK, maybe i'm gonna have a tough time selling this to the wife regardless.

I got good news after talking to the cigar shop manager. The family issues are going to be worked out real soon while the nephews are taking a two week vacation. So after christmas I should have myself a cash under the table job at the cigar shop in the evenings after my classes. I even have my own chair there already. :eyebrow:

Ooh and not to rub it in but lucky for me the B&M is a mere 4-5 min drive for me. Hell I could probably walk there in 10-20 min.

Sorry to hear about everyone's misfortunes. I'm a manager for a computer mapping department in a tribal government in Oklahoma if anyone is interested? Need GIS experience (I know, kind of specific), but check out the attached website for other positions. I know we are always needing qualified candidates for different positions, i.e. tech positions, financial, planning, construction, laborers, etc... Preference is given to "indian" candidates but anyone could end up with the position. Minimum pay for Cherokee Nation is $9.00/hr.

Cherokee Nation is like any other governmental entity, we provide services to tribal citizens just like any other state or federal government. Located in NE Oklahoma, cost of living is much less than the rest of the nation. If you have any questions just send me a pm and I'll try to help out any way I can.

Hope it gets better for everyone.

Have you been over to Occidental College? It's right near Glendale and a gorgeous place if you haven't been there yet. They have some grounds, food service, security, and other positions open. Some are "as needed" but until you get something permanent that's better than nothing. Probably not what you thought you'd do at a college but they pay and it's a great place to hang out even if you're not working there.

Thanks, but been there, done that...Craigslist was a total washout and there isn't much in consulting ins So. Florida...too many of us are unemployed so even that stuff goes to the younger guys...I can remember days when they used to scream for COBOL programmers and network engineers and would take you just as long as you were breathing...sigh...the worst thing about it is that I always had some funds coming in every year from a trust fund but thanks to the stock market crash my only income for 2009 was wiped out...:angerhead...good thing I have Social Security at least or I'd really be screwed but it's gonna be a tight year...

Sorry to hear about all the brothers...remember to be flexible and keep your options open. Networking is big too....don't just sit at home...get out to the local cigar lounge, you never know who you might sit down next to and start chatting with.
This is great advice. I have closed many deals large and small in cigar shops. I have met and hired people that I have met while talking over a stick. It is an ice breaker, some thing we have in common. I tend to be a listener and I am constantly amazed at the volume of information that passes around in a cigar shop big and small.

While you are at it check the local churches for networking groups. Check you city and town for job boards.

A website I have used for recruiting executives is
www.execunet.com.

You may look at this and say, that is just not me. It also costs to join as that is how they work. The good news is they have a great newsletter with excellent tips on interviews, resumes, and networking. The weekly email newsletter is free. The quality of their information is excellent.

Well fellow brother, I have now joined thie unemployed list. I was just let go from my job after about 6 months. Reason being I am not a good match in the cnc dept where I have been working. So I am now going to on the hunt for a new job, or just go back to school to finish my bacholers degree.

I've got nothing att. I am looking for pretty much anything for the time being, (no offense, but not a dishwasher / waiter / busboy position).

Doesnt have to be great pay, and I'm willing to be trained to do almost anything.

brooklyn, NY area preferred.

Well the gigs are finally starting to come in and I have a decent day job linned up so things are getting better. The dish washing job was at one of the fanciest hotels in Hollywood and it payed well so that was the only reason I considered it.

And yet another addition to the list. I was let go for having cancer, although I can't prove that.

I was a beverage distribution warehouse Mgr and loved my job. I had never had a single red mark against me and in fact, had several letters of appreciation in my work file. In June of '07 I was diagnosed with Colorectal Cancer and started the long road to recovery. In October, I took 90 days of FMLA (without pay), for chemo and radiation treatments. The day I was to return to work I was called in early to talk with my boss. He told me that the company had "restructured" and my position was eliminated. Only my position in the entire company was cut. During the next couple of days I called and talked with one of the office ladies there and was informed that my boss had been discussing cutting me for weeks and had already had the paperwork drawn up while I was on FMLA leave. The reason "overheard" was that I would probably need to have several medical absences over time for more treatments and he didn't want the headache of dealing with it. The office lady, fearful for her job would not put this in writing for me, but I knew the truth even before she told me. After making a call to the GA State Dept Of Labor, I was told that I didn't have a case since GA is an "at will" state and can terminate a person's employment at any time for any reason or even no reason at all. "When one door closes.........", well, time will tell.

It's been over a year now and I still have problems relating to the cancer. Although the DR's tell me the cancer is now gone, the treatments have taken their toll and created several related matters that have required 7 surgeries and ongoing pain and other issues. I've been cleared once again to return to work but due to these issues there are limited options for me so my search continues. I'm just thankful for a wonderful Wife that is understanding of my situation.

I'm so sorry to hear that brother. Hopefully things will pick up for everyone, myself included, with the new year.
