In the short time I have been here, sadly there have been others that have joined the growing number that is taking the nation by storm.

Here's my story.

In 1986, I applied for a part time job that I didn't really want, I only applied to appease my parents. They figured that after I graduated from high school and moved to the city that I would have a nice income for myself once I started college. Well, I never made it to college.

The part time job ended up being something that I really enjoyed and it ended up turning in to my career. I started out as a projectionist at the local movie theatre. From 1986 to 1993, I realized that being in this industry could lead to other opportunities. In March of 1993, I applied for a General Manager position with the same company, one month later, I was managing a 4 plex movie theatre.

From 1993 to 2007, I was in love with my job, each day I looked forward to going to work. I moved from the small 4 plex in MN to a 10 plex in IA, same company, new city, new challenges.
As luck would have it, I did such an outstanding job that when it came time for the company to find a replacement for their flagship 14 plex in ND I was the only choice. It wasn't really offered to me, I was more or less told that it would be mine if I wanted to move. Moving back to my home state was high on my list, back to my family and friends, I was in heaven.

In the spring of 2007, the theatre underwent a major renovation and expansion. Behind the scenes, the owners of the company were getting ready to retire and were looking at offers to sell off their largest locations. Sadly, I wasn't a part of the offer and didn't make the move to the new owners. I was offered a position to stay with the company that I "moved up the ladder" with, but it was in WI. I drove over to Rice Lake and looked at the theatre, but in the end decided that I had had enough moving.

Severance was offered and I accepted, I was burned out.

I spent the summer of 2007 tearing out the landscaping from around my parents house and putting in new. In the fall of 2007, my father underwent knee replacement surgery so I was more that happy to spend all of my time with him helping him with whatever was needed. Heh, thinking about it now, I did quite a bit of work for them but in no way was I ready to start looking for a new career.

In the spring of 2008, I had a project that I wanted to get finished. In 2006, I purchased a 1974 RD 250 real cheap because it was in a sad state but with the career and all, I never had any time to work on it. I spent 2 months looking for parts to rebuild this motorcycle while helping out my father when needed. Finally, I found a donor motorcycle and proceeded to spend the next 3 months tearing down, cleaning, painting and rebuilding this classic. Eventually, it was road worthy and for a few weeks I tweaked until it purred. Sadly, I ran out of warm weather and it still needs a little work yet.

Now, just as the country in undergoing the worse economy pretty much since the depression, I'm getting bored and am ready to get back to work. Unfortunately, finding anything has been very difficult. I send out about 5 resumes a week, sometimes more, sometimes less, it's not going to well. So if anyone has use for an ex movie theatre General Manager with over 20 years of management and customer experience let me know.

I'd like to hear about others that no longer have to punch the time clock for the time being, what's your story.

I guess I should have added that even though my unemployment wasn't a direct result of the current economy, my unsuccessful job hunting now is.

First piece of advice and I went through the job search job, (yes it is a full time job) three times: you should be making a minimum of 100 calls a day resulting in sending about 50 resumes a week. Remember how hard you worked at your job? Work harder at finding one.
