My 28 bottle wine cooler needed an active RH system, so I use an Oasis on the bottom shelf and 1lb of 65% beads towards the top. Mine is a thermoelectric which seems to suck out the RH even with an external temp controller during the summer when it runs a good bit. I do not think there is one simple answer to these but one of these variable solutions should work for you. Good luck.

what is the absolute lowest temp that you should keep cigars at before it starts to damage them, does anyone know?

We know the top temp (about 75-78 degrees or so) but I have never seen anything on the bottom range...

Just don't freeze them and attempt to smoke them. (They can be frozen and should if ye suspect beetle infestation; but it'll crack the cigar if the temperature changes too drastically)

Thanks for the info!

but what about keeping them at like 58-60 degrees?

Just wondering if it would have any bad effects...

Thelower the temperature, the slower the aging. But that's still a good temperature so no worries.

when the fridge is unplugged, the rh is a solid 67%. when i plug it in, it drops to 56% within 10 minutes and stays there. i unplug it again, and within 10-15 minutes it's back up to 67%. :angeryell

You probably need some sort of active humidification to ADD humidity in there.

If you read Headbanger's post, you'll see that he needed a Cigar Oasis to raise the humidity.

I also had the same problem, and I too bought a Cigar Oasis to raise the humidity. Once I got it, all my humidification problems went away.

I have a CO XL that I'm not using. The digital gauge is not accuate, so you'll have to have your own hygrometer and do the math yourself. Wanna work a trade?

is yours the battery powered one? and is the CO XL the one that you just refill the cartridge with distilled water?

I have both the battery pack and the AC adapter, with an extra water cartridge. Yes they can be refilled, but they should be replaced after a while.

And I don't need much in return, It's not being used now. I also got a great deal on it in a trade, so I'll be passing on the great deal to you.

I have a 16 bottle wine cooler that I'm starting to fill up. I have a pound of 65% beads and the humidity is good and solid... Until I plug it in. As soon as I plug it in the humidity rapidly drops. It's not an issue now, but I'm thinking it could become one as it gets warmer here on phoenix. It is a thermoelectric unit and any suggestions would be appreciated.
I have exactly the same problem as the starter of this thread. Specs being 28 bottle thermoelectric wine cooler, full of empty cigar boxes and cedar bits, 1 pound of Hf65% beads and Hydra Sm unit with a small and a big extra fan. When the cooler unplugged, the humidity is exactly where I want it, but as soon as I plug it in, temperature lowers to 19 degrees celsius (some 66 degrees fahrenheit) but the RH% lowers to some 54-55 and refuses to raise. I've plugged the drain with super duct tape and still nothing.

Really losing patience with this piece of crap and yearning to go back to more simple times of decent wooden humidors...

the temp setting is just a dial. it's all the way up. when i get up in the morning it's about 60 degrees, but the humidity is at about 51 % i have a couple full boxes in there and the rest of the space is filled with empties. Is there something that i should be blocking off? it's an edgestar btw.
I have a 28 bottle edgestar and my humidity did that for a while. What works for me is that I use an external temperature controller and turn the dial so that when the unit is on it runs at low to med-low and the humidity doesn't fluctuate as much. When it was on high the humidity would drop rapidly.

Remember that you are dealing with Relative humidity, that means that the same amount of moisture in the air will read different numbers at different temperatures. First stablalize your temperature, use the setup just mentioned if you need to.

Then test your hygromater at the temp you will be using it at with a salt test or kit. Once you know it's accurate at that range then adjust the humidity.

Understand that if you open the door on a humidor that big and empty it will take a very long time for beads to stabalize all that air. Empty cigar boxes will help, but filling it with lots of cigars will help the most. Start with one's you will not cry over if they split a foot or dry out and see how they feel after a week inside. It sucks and I know you want your new toy all done and happy, but these things take time.

I've calibrated the both meters with Boveda calibrating kit inside the cooler, the other was spot on, the other 1% off.

But I'll give it more time before I've haul to scrapyard and blow it up. Naturally making a short movie of it.

Ditched the cursed winecooler and got a decent Dunhill half-cabinet instead. So-long humidity problems and overflowing condensation water.
