I just got back from a day with my daughter, at a cheerleading compation.
she is six years old. what makes me made is she and the team is on a medal and a trophy for FOURTH PLACE. not only is it FOURTH place but it is LAST PLACE!!!!!!

I understand that at this age it is JUST FOR FUN, but really, come on, can we atleast get these kids to understand that if you screw around at practice you will do crappy in the compation! I just do not get it! And i am spending money on this and losing sleep over it. Had to have her there at 8am and I got home from the second job(used to pay for this activity) at 1am and we had to be up at 6am. My wife (she who must be obeyied) does not understand why I am pissed off.

hell i will just go and smoke that may solve this, for a time.

You can thank a group called Mothers of America. They are the ones that are trying to get rid of all forms of score keeping in sports for young children. The way most events geta round this is give every child something for competting

They are the same group that tried to make the armed forces to stop swearing and putting their hands on recruits in boot camp. They said it was unnessecary and crule.

It does seem like a lot of Bullsh!t. Why do they give trophy's for last place? That's wrong, it mean that you don't even have to try hard enough to get to first, second or third place, as long as they have a trophy they will stop trying hard. They really should take that away. Where's the fun of competing if you don't even try hard to actually get your place in first, second or third?

Try to talk with the coach or the principal or i don't know who you should talk to. Try saying everything you just said here, gather people, I'm sure your not the only one that feel's that way. You can't keep on spending money like a dope.

I'd say your leaving every child behind when you teach them that everyone's a winner....they don't get that when they get older....everyone doesn't get into the best college or get the best job.I think we are setting them up for real failure when we fail to show them that simply particapation is not enough to earn a medal...Damn, where is the old school idea of work hard and sweat and compete and then the best man/women wins....

This is a problem everywhere. I stopped coaching baseball because the rules say that everyone on the team must play one inning. That was game costly for me because I had ten out of 13 players that had any skills but the minute one of the three got in the game we lost the game. Those same people would not come to practice and their parents would call me stating why their child only played one inning. Amazing!!!

The only way to win is by losing first. And losing i mean actually saying "you lost" try harder next time.
They must bring back the failure instead of everyone-is-a-winner. We only learn by failures, by losing, by doing that we learn how to make it perfect and if not perfect at least excellent!

Maybe I'm missing the point, but a guy is working a second job to pay for an activity he does not support and we a blaming society and it's values? How about a little self responsibility and determination. Quit the second job, use that time to get a stick and dig a hole with her.

When my six year old got a trophy for playing soccer, he was so thrilled and proud. I told him that he did a great job earning that trophy. He seemed to confuse it with 'winning' the trophy.

So I sat down with him and explained that they gave the trophy to all the kids for playing the best they could all 'season'. They did not 'win' (they hardly played each other competatively).

At six years old, they're just trying to get the kids self confidence and self esteem up a little through positive encouragement.

They did this same thing in karate. It's not a competative activity (this particular brand), it's more about fitness lifestyle, and teaching the kids (though special recognition is giving to children who excel).

I do however agree that, entitlement (& participation is enough) is taught to the children by society, teachers and parents.

When it's a competative activity, there are winners and losers. How to handle these with good sportsmanship is in decline too - how often do we see news of a parent spazzing out at a kids softball game? Great example.

All of you guys brought up good points. I would also have to agree with taking a look at the value in working a second job to support a 6-year old's desire. A 6 year old changes what they want every week. Spending more quality time (not tv time) with our kids does more for them than any sport, competative or not.

i've been through the same thing. everyone's little snowflake is "special". well, folks, not every kid is special. they can't be. doesn't mean that they shouldn't try hard to be special, but they aren't automatically so.
and please don't compete. that means someone has to lose, and that would make them loser "feel" bad. we want everyone to feel good.
so if radical or illegal people want to come in and take over, that's ok. be nice, respect their feelings.
