A participation award is fine and for some kids and parents that is enough. As for my 5 year girl..she wants to win, no second place take no prisoners. WIN. this is most likely my influence that taught her to never stop trying to get that ball back to the other team's goal. That's all she had to told. NEVER STOP TRYING. Turns out if that's all she does all day, she will win. And that's because every other kids at some point seems to stop trying. They proabably stop because they have been taught that they will get a trophy whether they win or lose. Either way I don't think these 4th place trophys are for the kds. They are for the parents, so they don't feel bad for raising kids that stop trying to win. I always tell my girl she did a good job, and that's because she doesn't stop trying. As long as she's trying, then she's doing a good job. But to win you have to score more points. And the team with the least amount of points at the end of a game loses. That's why we sold chocolates to put up new scoreboard for God's sake. So we could more easily keep track of whick team was WINNING. $th place, my Ass...2nd place is the first loser.

I TOTALLY understand your feeling here as I have a 10 year old daughter. But you are talking about awards for a 6 year old child.
The way our sports are set up is to keep all the younger children active, teach them basic skills, learn teamwork, camaraderie and making friends, and to keep them active and healthy. If they did not try to make them feel good early on, more children quit sports all together making turn to other bad things later in life. For all the things I posted above I finally realize why they do these things early on. This year my 5th grader will be grouped with other girls from 6th and 7th grade so she will now start learning play well or learn to be a cheerleader while sitting on the sidelines.

I once did an essay out of society's attitude towards losing...the kids whinning like pansies about not making the team, the gal's crying like they were cracking their skull with a sledgehammer when they aren't allowed to go to a party; and ultimately, the fact that this attitude from the mothers of: "we are all special", is bloody screwing up everything. What's so wrong in demanding something before ye win?

oh, here is a subject that gets me riled. sports is just the tip of the iceberg. we must not bruise their precious fragile egos. somewhere down the line, we forgot theat children have the most resilient souls. now, we have 'laws' and 'societal agencies' that will remove your children because they don't agree with your parenting techniques.
