So since I have so much free time on my hands, I decided I am going to refinish my kitchen table top, It is a solid oak top, slight scratches and a couple major ones too.

Going to sand it and poly it, my question is would it be better to hand sand the entire top, or use a electric sander? I want to try and not get any wave action and keep it as flat as possible, So how should I go about it?

I think electric would be fine start with coarse and work up to superfine grit. Then when you re-finish it use steel wool in between coats. Its quite the process but the more time you put in the better it will look.

I thought you were supose to use brown paper bags, Thats what i remember using. So a fine steel wool? looking to put one several coats of poly for good finish and protection in the future. But don't want to take it to a fake look,

I think 3M makes a synthetic between coat sponge type pad as well. If you don't want it too glossy go with a low luster poly.

Bring it on over. I work tomorrow during the day, if you want to bring it on Wed we can get it ready for finishing in a day. Forget the beer, bottled water works for me, forget the Habanos, Opus and Tats are more my stlye! :eyebrow:

ah! the brotherhood!
Naw, I'm just in it for the booze!

Hey Kelly, you gotta think about if you want to just try to get through the finish, or into the stain as well. Getting rid of all those deep scratches may require sanding through the stain...then matching may be a bitch. Even just trying to get through the finish and leaving the stain...one rotation to many of the sander and bingo, now the whole thing needs to be re-done. Just a thought, are you ready to go that far?
