I've actually thought about this! A program could be written (like a Widget) on your computer that keeps track of your humidors rH and temp readings! You could even set up the program to warn you (screen warning, email, etc.) when the readings go outside of your desired range!

I think it's a really cool idea, but the practicality is tough for one reason--battery life. Bluetooth is a power hog. The only thing I could think of is that the unit is programed to be on standby most of the time...maybe it turns on every--FILL IN TIMEFRAME HERE (12 hours, 2 days, whatever the user wants)--and send the data to your computer. This would help with battery issues.

Anyway, it's theoretically plausible, but whether the market value is really their is what I'm worried about. I'd buy it--for sure--but are enough people are that tech-savvy in he cigar world to make this marketable?

So what were your ideas?

Pretty much just that. I've used and did some code modification for reef tanks in the past which notified you of temp changes and even send out emails or SMS. The one for reef tanks was a little more involved and would trigger certain events based on the scenarios ranging from turning off lights to dosing with chemical, etc. If anything I was thinking RFID sensors for temperature and maybe connecting this device to a small computer fan which would kick on if need be. While I know the market wouldn't be big I just think it would be really satisfying to do. Who knows maybe it could be adapted to active humidification as well.

This might actually be an even better solution. I will follow up on this.

About the Humidity-Temperature Sensor. The battery life for the Humidity-Temperature tag typically exceeds 3.5 years. The tag operates with a very low duty cycle and a 10-second beacon rate. The R155’s form factor ensures clear signal transmission in high-density deployments. Featuring a low-battery alert, the tag will continue to monitor humidity and temperature for at least three months following this alerting. After that, the tag will continue to broadcast its unique ID and a low battery indication with each beacon, but will no longer report temperature and humidity.

I'm up for multiple ideas at this point. However I like the idea of an RFID chip as it's small and it has a life span of 3+ years. I'll post up once I hear back from the vendor.

Well I spoke to a rep and the sensors I need are pretty cheap however the readers are what seems to be expensive. I'm looking for other solutions but will keep you guys posted.

While there are many benefits, however to be honest the real answer is because it's doable. It would also notify you of vis SMS or e-mail. It could also kick on a cooling device as well. But again, mostly because I want to see if I can do it. The hard part is going to be the reader. The price is going to be a little steep but it will more than likely be a custom product.

Just wondering! Kinda thought that to be the answer, but I just wanted to be sure I wasn't missing something!
I can answer that question with a question...What is point of building your own humidor when you can buy one cheaper and not do any work to build one Wade??? Sometimes it's not about the end result but the process that gets you there.

Yeah sadly it looks like a piece of hardware is over $1,000. I'm going to look around and see if I can find one cheaper. I know there has to be one cheaper than 1k.

Not sure if this is of any help, I have seen memory temp / Rh sensors that have a usb plug on them (like a memory stick). The data is down loaded into into your computer... not remote like you are looking for...but close.

this is a good way to drive yourself nuts. I can imagine you guys going home early from work because the humidity level in your humidor dropped 2 points...imagine the panic.

Just talked to my smoking buddy today, he's a CAD guy as well. He thought it was a tremendous idea and said he had thought once before that someone should make something like this...and that he'd buy it in a second.

His opinion was that this could be marketable as well. Especially with the price of all the components going down all the time, this could be a real possibility!

...still looking back through google for it. I ran across it when looking for a remote hygrometer. Cool, small device that downloaded to your computer. I'll find the link and post.
