Sorry to hear about the job. Where in Florida are you thinking about and what kind of work are you looking for?
Well as far as the area I'm looking at it will probably be Gulf Side....somewhere near the greater Sarasota area, but I'd be willing to go north of Tampa and as far south as Naples. I just enjoy the beaches on that side better, but I would be open to the east side if a job opportunity presented itself. I've thought about Miami, but I'm concerned with the fact that I don't speak a lick of Spanish.

Type of job, well that is an interesting question. My natural thoughts lie toward continuing to do what I do..which is working as a service advisor in a service department. Unfortunately, the business is down significantly right now. The looser, dreamer side of my personality wants me to look into working at a resort or a beach side bar of some kind. I have a deep down desire to be a beach bum, to be honest...but not really much of a way to make a living.

I used to work at champion chevrolet. Where were you?
Wow, Champion..no kidding? I used to drive by that place every morning and night. I was working at Brighton Ford. What did you do at Champion?

You're in St. Thomas? Are you independently rich? How are you making that work? I've been actively researching living on an island somewhere, but it just seemed so expensive where you're at..or even Hawaii. So I settled on my idea of moving to Florida because it's mainland and easier to come back home if something doesn't work out..and it's also much cheaper. I'm also very familiar with the state.

I think the west side of the state is hit harder than the east for work. Lots of snowbird areas over there, and the show birds have let the houses go to forclosure and are not coming down any more. Resorts are strugling to get people to come to them, but tourism from out of the US isn't doing bad in Miami and southern part of state.

Yeah, I was kind of worried about the economy on the west side. It's mostly retiree and tourism driven...that is definitely a fear of mine. There's definitely more money on the east side...with the exception of a small number of cities like Naples, etc. I guess I'll just keep my eyes open and wait for the right opportunity to pop up.

I started off as a car porter and moved into sales....and hated it. I've been in St.Thomas for 2.5 years now. I bartend at the Marriott Frenchmans reef:

It is expensive to live here (and I am the oposite of independantly wealthy), but I do make great money here. We have a couple bartenders leaving in the coming months. food for thought.

Sorry to hear of your job demise. However, you are in a good industry. New car sales will definitely be down for the next few years - and thus people will be keeping and repairing their current cars.

You might want to consider independent shops rather than dealerships for the next job search. Good luck!

As soon as I read the title, I knew what was coming. Maybe it's a blessing in disguise with your desire to move to FL. Good luck man.

Oh Don Windberg...no he up and left, last I heard he was back to selling meat out of the back of a truck.
Yup...that's Spanky:laugh:The two things he knows best is slinging meat (no pun intended...even with the nickname) and owing people money.
On a serious note...sorry to hear about the job...I have heard a lot of rumors about that place and none of them good. Hit me up sometime and I have a beer and a cigar with your name on them!
