Squid® is pretty durn conservative, which is not to say I can't appreciate perky little hippy chicks as long as they don't talk too much. I mean don't talk at ALL... <G>

I jest of course. Politically, I can't easily explain myself without writing volumes. Now those volumes have already been written by a science fiction author named Bob Heinlein. Anyone who's read a few of his books has an idea of Squid®'s politics without me wasting any more space... Financially, the books of Ayn Rand seem to exemplify how I feel fairly precisely, so I don't need to expound on finances either. There you have it. A long lifetime of political and financial thought and philosophy expressed in a few sentences... Gosh, I'm good! <G>

It's been interesting to follow this thread and look at the responses. Even though the poll uses the standards of conservative/liberal as opposed to party affiliation, what I really find fascinating is the way the general position of the parties, and their presumed liberal/conservative status, has changed in just a few decades.

40 years ago the conservatives were perceived as trying to enforce their will on the liberals. The liberals were the ones saying "you can't tell me how to live, you can't tell me what to do and what not to do", "I'll sit on the courthouse steps and smoke this joint and there ain't shit you can do about it". The irony never ceases to amaze me.

I am a conservative, and I've got some basic standards that I hold dear:

If you breed them, you feed them.

If you buy it, you pay for it.

Welfare and support programs should be used as a survival mechanism, not a life long entitlement.

If you are not in this country legally, and don't pay taxes, you are on your own.

All I really want to do is make my own choices, as much as that's possible.
Mark
I will agree to most, but I would not concider myself as conservative or liberal, more like inbetween. I would say a liberal conservative or a conservative liberal.

I agree with:

If you breed them, you feed them.

If you buy it, you pay for it.

Welfare and support programs should be used as a survival mechanism, not a life long entitlement.

If you are not in this country legally, and don't pay taxes, you are on your own, and if I find you, I kick your ass back to your country.

but also:

An EYE for an EYE.

free market

less government

I just want to live my life the way I want and not have someone tell me how to.

I have read nearly every word he wrote and published.

Oddly enough, I've never referred to him as Bob. :hysterica

Comes from reading alt.fan.heinlein and the Heinlein Society for far too many years. The friends and fans (and even his wife Virginia) always called him Bob rather than Robert.

Well considering I read all his work before I was ever on the 'Net--and never really did any research on him afterwords--it doesn't surprise me that I didn't know that.

Yes there is my libertarian friend. I'd bet that 85% of Americans cant tell you the difference between either

Hmmm. That's an interesting conversation in its own right. The easy answer is, one is a political party and one is not. To go any further in the conversation you have to first agree on a definition for "liberal". Not as easy a task as one would think.

Unfortunately, our problems will not be solved peacefully. I hate to say that, but it is true. At some point, the United States will have another civil war. When nobody will budge, violence is the only option.

oh that's not the hard part. piece of cake. "liberal" as the word implies prefer a substantial amount of government intervention and regulation.
