The captain of the Maersk Alabama was freed Sunday after being held captive since Wednesday by pirates off the coast of Somalia, a senior U.S. official with knowledge of the situation told CNN.

Capt. Richard Phillips of the Maersk Alabama is being held by pirates on a lifeboat off Somalia.

1 of 2 The official said Capt. Richard Phillips is uninjured and in good condition, and that three of the four pirates were killed. The fourth pirate is in custody. Phillips was taken aboard the USS Bainbridge, a nearby naval warship.

Earlier Sunday afternoon Maersk Line Limited, owner of the Maersk Alabama, said the U.S. Navy informed the company that it had sighted Phillips in a lifeboat where pirates are holding him.

Unfortunately this will continue to happen as long as any ships pass through Somalian waters. I think the US should just stay clear of the area entirely, the Somalian people back these pirates because for years foreign countries have been taking Hundreds of millions of dollars worth of tuna, shrimp, lobster and other sea life from their waters, not to mention Europe uses there seas as a Nucler Waste dumping ground...we should just stay clear from there.
Nuclear waste dumping ground. I wonder where our fish is coming from. I ate a gigantic Shrimp the other day. Gigantic, Shrimp, that should tell u something:thinkidea

The Somali people back the pirates because there is no functioning government, and because our roll over and capitulate world has gotten accustomed to paying ransoms in this part of the world. Kind of tough to blame that on Europe.

I'm not yet buying the story that the origin of the Pirates was the noble cause of protecting the Coastal ecology. It would be like the Sierra Club members robbing banks and discussing their origins as environmentalists.

Being this was the first American flagged and crewed vessel hijacked in these waters, it was a test of the new administration. While I was skeptical, I have to say our President has aced this test.

As far as future retribution from the Pirates, I suspect death will be a pretty good deterrent.

This piracy trend is not any sort of retribution at all. It's just criminals taking advantage of the fact that they live in a lawless country with no government.

I believe this was a US-flagged ship. Our snipers shot each of these three fuckers right in the head. I believe this will seriously curtail future piracy and really doubt they will fuck with any Americans from here on out.

Im not laying blame anywhere just making a statement, As soon as the government was gone, European ships started appearing off the coast of Somalia, dumping vast barrels into the ocean. The coastal population began to sicken. At first they suffered strange rashes, nausea and malformed babies. Then, after the 2005 tsunami, hundreds of the dumped and leaking barrels washed up on shore. People began to suffer from radiation sickness, and more than 300 died.
And you wonder why they are attacking European shipping. They sure aren't dumping waste in the English Channel. I wonder why but we all know the answer. Death to the Pirates!!!!:nono::angryteet

Was sitting in a B&M with a Ranger on Sat when they announced the navy had approached the life boat and drawn fire. He got a big grin on his face and said the Seals are doing recon, should happen tonight. BAM. Way to go SEALS.
