well, I need some advice, so I thought id ask the most cigar smart people I know.... YALL! okay so heres the deal ...
Im movin out at the end of the month(woot!) and movin in with a buddy of mine ( who also is a cigar smoker). Ive been wanting/needing a bigger storage for my cigars. I have a small 1.1 gallon Rubbermaid tupperdor ( pics on my profile) that is filled to the brim. Ive been looking around at regular humidors. I found one that would go with my desk and book case. http://www.tampahumidor.com/sd4/product/chelsea-iii-5005.cfm

But I got to thinking, since it gets as hot as balls here in SC, what about a wineador. I looked around and found that a 8-12 bottle wine chiller would be the perfect size( i know yall are gonna say go bigger, but i dont see myself buying boxes). I looked on Ebay and found one i like.

so, heres where yall come in. I need some help figuring out what would be best bet for me. so any comments, concerns, advice, etc would be great appreciated.

We all feel our next storage container is going to be big enough, rarely is it. Go bigger. I do like the Vinotemp in your situation if it's getting pretty warm there. Many have it and I've yet to hear a complaint on them.

like wade said, if we think a certain size is big enough....its usually not. if its in the budget....go above and beyond. This is coming from a noob. I have a 28 bottle and am glad I stepped up.

One problem I see with that small Vino unit you linked to is the 2 temp zones. Sure, you could set them to the same temp, but the separator itself will eat up a LOT of space in there. You'll have a solid wall inside that won't be any use but will take up room.

If you want a small unit, look for one that is a 1-temp zone model...with one big open area.

FWIW, I used to have a 12 bottle Avanti. It worked well until I outgrew it.

i know everyone is gonna say go bigger... With tuition, insurance, rent, beer, and other fun bills to pay, buying boxes is out of the question. so i just need some room and temp control for my singles. so im lookin at a 12 bottle at the most.

You're correct to go with temp control...I live in Atlanta and I'd be lost without temp controls for my cigars.

I was going to also suggest a 28 bottle, but if you want to stay small, that's fine. Remember that some of your space will be taken up with either a humidification device, or beads. You'll probably want 3/4 to 1 lb. of beads.

Like Sheep, I'm not sure about that separator for the dual temps. You'll have to humidify both sections and you are losing additional space with that feature. See if you can find a 12 bottle with one big open space. You can make your own slide-in shelves using slats of spanish cedar.

If you can afford it, I would highly suggest getting an external temperature controller, as the cooling system in the unit may make it difficult to keep the temp in there as high as 65 - 70 degrees. Remember, it was made to chill wine, not keep cigars, so an external unit that will actually shut the fridge off and turn it on again within a set temperature range is a nice investment.

Good luck, and let us know how it goes.
