I used to have two five foot kings and a 4 foot red rat in the house... in terrariums.... snakes are great! I'm down to one orange and white honduran milk snake now. Rat snakes will keep the pests away. Kings will keep poisonous snakes away, as well as mice and rats. It's good to fear them if you can't tell them apart... but the vast majority of snakes are harmless and the bad ones are pretty easy to identify...

Whatever you do, do not, I repeat, DO NOT, take off your ipod while snake catching.

I wonder what kind of music one listens to while catching snakes??
Hehehe....I was mowing the grass with the ipod on and got off the mower to move the snake. FWIW, I had the music paused while handling the snake.

Snakes are good. We live on 6 acres and they keep the mice under control. Ours are about this size. This is last summer...I was removing it from the front yard to the back field using a homemade snare.

yea if you know hes a rat snake leave him alone. weve had rat snakes before no problem with em...but copper heads and water moccasins are not as nice. i dont care how manly you can be, as soon as you see a 3 foot canebrake less than a foot away from your feet, your gonna need a new pair of pants....

So let me get this right... you had two King Cobras?? in your house that you used for pest control? from what I understand Kings will only eat snakes hence the biggest obstacle in breeding/captivity programs.

This is a great thread, I have to say! I don't have much experience handling them, though when I was a kid I caught a King Snake at my grampa's place. We trapped it using a garbage can, and when I was convinced it wasn't poisonous (and after my mom went inside) I grabbed it with my hands. It was very cool, and rather scary, lol.
