artie, Arlin Liss uses something along that line. He puts them inside of the humidity canisters.

Avallo uses a software based solution to an empty canister. if the canister empties, and humidity drops 3 points below the set point, the display on the Accumonitor starts flashing.

uhm, it's distilled water, you can get it anywhere withing 20 minutes, I wouldn't worry about it, just more stuff to break
I agree. In a humidor, you should be safe if you need to "wait till tomorrow" to go out to get distilled water... at worst it will drop a few points humidity if you don't open it every few minutes.

The Set & Forget system uses a software based solution also. If the system operates longer than 2hours & doesn't reach the shut off point, a buzzer sounds. The humidor is either low on water or the door was left open. It's just loud enough to be an audible even with the doors closed.

I have tried the float valve type assembly to activate a beeper. It works, but I worry that it will eventually wear & start to hang up. Probably not in our lifetime, but if it moves someday it will break.

Here is a 'solid state' optical sensor that has NO MOVING parts to fail!!!

Again, I am offering what is superior to all others!

A good subject to bring up and thanks for the idea, but I have to go with Bob and Arlin's methods. Moving parts, high humidity, long term submersion in water, all things that effect free movement of a float. If a small piece of tobacco or anything were to stick the float, you could get a false reading.

I guess if you can't see your reservoir then something like that is a good idea. I have an Arlin Liss humidification that has the above mentioned sensor, it's never gone off because I have two humidifiers that hold almost two gallons each, so basically a years supply of distilled water, but then again, all I have to do is open a door and look how much water is left. I think sometimes we try to get to many bells and whistles in what are pretty simple systems.
