Hey there!

I'm having trouble getting my 150 ct. humidor up to 70%.

It stays at a constant 66 degrees. Is this acceptable, and if so, are there any drawback to being 3-4 degrees off?

I've got two Xikar gel jars in there, and yesterday, I purchased a Xikar digital hyrgometer.

I'd say the humi is about 85% full.

Thanks in advance!

Good to know.... the 70/70 has been ingrained, and is almost everywhere you look. Good to know that it doesn't have to be an exact science.

Next question:

I've taken all my smokes out of their respective plastic wrappers. I like the look of them sitting in the humi naked. Anyone store their sticks with wrappers on in the humi?

Do what you like. Sticks in cello are a bit more protected... sticks without, you have to be a bit more careful as you can chip the foot easily. So either way, the sticks will be fine...
I leave mine as they come.

Seriously the most over asked question on the internet regarding cigars, that and the fact that it just really doesn't matter.

I keep my humi at 64% to 66%.

The mythical 70%--70º is too wet for my tastes.

Agreed. I've found that my cigars draw better and burn straighter when stored in this range than at my previous 70%.

Also, I store any new cigars I get for about a month before I smoke them, if I can help it. That's just because I've had too many experiences of recent acquisitions that were plugged or burned crazy--and this really messes up the flavor.

But I'm admittedly anal about stuff like this, lol.

Wouldn't you like to know?
That and there is differences if for aging or for smoking. I believe Gotham stores their smokes at 60. I have been told by many that below 70 the oils will dry up and turn the smoke flavourless. Now I can tune them out permanently after smoking sticks that have been aged for 50 years at 60 and were still in fantastic shape.

how old is your humidor? if its fairly new it might take a while for the cedar to absorb enough moisture before you hit the constant 70% humidity level.

if not then you might want to visually inspect the humi. Humi's dont have to be 100% air tight... but you should ensure you have a pretty good seal. also.. if your humi happens to be under an A/C vent then that could lower the humidity significantly. there are many factors to consider.

but just because you cant get to the 70%, and just because alot of brothers here like 65-68%, doesn't mean you should give up. you should try smoking cigars at different humidity levels to figure out what suits your individual taste.

I, for example, prefer 70-71%, and can't stand smoking a cigar at 68% or below.

Thanks LB. My humidor is very new, and you're right, it still may take awhile. However, I think that my seal is VERY good, and don't think that's an issue. I'm really too new to determine what smokes better at what humidity level. I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't doing any damage, and from the majority of responses, I should be fine. I will keep an eye out though!
