Yup that's pretty much it. They say that there are different aging properties to the different packagings. Other then aging potential the exact same cigar.

Well, from what I have read, the UnVarnished was discontiuned in 2002, and was a different size (with the Varnished being longer)...Look here for info:

It is also rumored to be a different blend between to two, with the V being the better stick, but I have never been able to get confirmation of that...

I just got a full box of 8-9-8V from 01 that I can't wait to try out :)

It's not rumored, they are different. The RG is different by one plus the desired blend is noticeably opposite between the two.

From my personal experiences smoking out of Varnished and Unvarnished boxes from the same year, the blends were indeed different. The 898V was meatier and spicier whereas the Unvarnished was lighter and much more mellower.

This just reminded I've got a box of '70s 898UV stashed somewhere in the cabinets. I need to get over this sinus infection and smoke one already.
